Gigabit Ethernet adapters

This section describes how to troubleshoot the Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and use the diagnostics diskette.
Note:The diagnostics diskette is available at www.ibm.com/storage/support/nas.

Troubleshooting the Gigabit Ethernet adapter

See Table 2 and Table 1 for information on the Gigabit Ethernet adapter LEDs.
Note:See Figure 7 for the location of the Gigabit Ethernet Copper Adapter LEDs described in Table 1.

Figure fln0a007 not displayed.

Table 1. LEDs on the Gigabit Ethernet Copper Adapter
LED Meaning
PRO LED Identifies the adapter by blinking.
LINK on Indicates the adapter is connected to a valid link partner and is receiving pulses.
Blinking ACT LED The adapter is sending/receiving data.
10/100/1000
Amber = 1000 Mbps
Green = 100 Mbps
Off = 10 Mbps

Note:See Figure 8 for the location of the Gigabit Ethernet SX Adapter LEDs described in Table 2.

Table 2. LEDs on the Gigabit Ethernet SX Adapter
LED Meaning
PRO LED Identifies the adapter by blinking.
TX on The adapter is sending data.
RX on The adapter is receiving data.
Link on The adapter is connected to a valid link partner and is receiving link pulses.
Link off Check all connections at the adapter and link partner. Make sure the link partner is set to 1000 Mbps and full duplex and the drive is loaded.

See Table 3 for information on troubleshooting the Ethernet adapter.

Table 3. Troubleshooting the Ethernet Adapters
Symptom Suggested Actions
The computer cannot find the adapter.
  • Ensure that the adapter is firmly seated in the slot.
  • Try a different PCI busmaster slot.

Diagnostic pass but the connection fails.
  • Ensure that the network cable is securely attached.

The adapter stopped working for no apparent reason.
  • Reseat the adapter.
  • Reinstall the operating system using the Recovery CD.

The Link LED does not appear.
  • Check all connections at the adapter and the buffered repeater or switch.
  • Ensure that the operating system is operational.
  • Use a different port on the buffered repeater or switch.
  • Ensure that the buffered repeater or switch port is configured for 1000 Mbps and full duplex.

RX or TX LED or ACT LED does not appear
  • Try a different adapter.
  • Ensure that the operating system is operational.
  • Log in from a workstation (the network may be idle).

Using the diagnostics diskette

Note:The diagnostics diskette is available at www.ibm.com/storage/support/nas.

You can use the diagnostics diskette to detect problems with the appliance's Gigabit Ethernet Adapter. This diskette can be used to test both Gigabit Ethernet Copper Adapters and Gigabit Ethernet SX Adapters. To use this diskette:

  1. Connect a monitor and keyboard to the appliance.
    Note:The monitor and keyboard are not supplied with the appliance and must be obtained separately.
  2. Place the diagnostics diskette into the floppy drive slot and switch the appliance on.
  3. At boot up, a selection panel appears. This selection panel allows you to choose either the Ethernet card or ServeRAID(TM) card. Choose which device you would like to test.
  4. Press Enter at the main diagnostics panel. The diagnostics diskette will then search the appliance to ensure an adapter is installed.
  5. If the proper adapter is detected, a selection panel will appear.
  6. Select Test the Adapter. (If you wish to test the adapter without having a network connection, choose that option from the Main panel; then, return back to the Main panel to Test the Adapter.)
  7. Upon successful completion of the test, exit the diagnostics program by following the onscreen prompts.
    Note:If a faulty adapter is found, replace the adapter and rerun the diagnostics to ensure the new adapter is operating correctly.
  8. After exiting the program, remove the diskette and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to reboot the appliance.
