# ---------------------------------------------------------------------- # File information # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- File name: downloadHints.txt FTP Site: ftp.software.ibm.com Directory: /storage/adsm/3466 URL to access directory: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com//storage/adsm/3466 Last Modification Date: 03/29/2000 # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- # General information # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This document provides instructions on how to download resources for 3466 from the service directory located at: ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/adsm/3466 The address for the ftp site is: ftp.software.ibm.com The directory name on this site for 3466 resources is: /storage/adsm/3466 # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- # Setting up Netscape to access the internet from the IBM intranet # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Please contact your local support group for assistance in reaching an external FTP site. # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- # downloading a file from the 3466 ftp directory #----------------------------------------------------------------------- The 3466 directory contains a list of resources that can be downloaded. The file README.TXT provides a brief description of each resource. Other important files include: -- downloadHints.txt (this document) -- aixLppInstallHints.txt - provides a generic step for installing AIX installable filesets. To download a file: -- hold down the shift key -- left click on the item to be downloaded -- a save dialog menu will be presented. Save the file to the desired directory Hint: the save dialog for Netscape running on AIX is a bit cumbersome and far from intuitive. The default save directory will be the directory that the user was in when Netscape was launched. Positioning to the directory where you want the file saved prior to launching Netscape may be useful. So where should a file be downloaded? It depends on the resource being downloaded. # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- # Procedures for downloading resources to a Windows/DOS system so they # can later be transferred to AIX on a diskette #----------------------------------------------------------------------- These procedures describe how to transport 3466 resources from a diskette created on Window/DOS which is later read using the dosread function available on AIX on the 3466 system. Obviously, it is not possible to transfer resources that are larger than a diskette (1.44MB). Here are the generic steps: -- format an empty diskette on the DOS system -- downloaded the file(s) from the ftp site to the DOS system -- copy the file(s) to the diskette on the DOS system -- insert the diskette into the reader on the AIX system -- enter the command 'dosdir' at an AIX command prompt -- enter the dosread command to copy the file from the diskette to the desired location. The files must be processed one at a time as wildcards are not recognized. Note that filenames that do not conform to DOS conventions, 8 chars for the filename and 3 chars for the extension, will be hashed to a unique name. The file should be unloaded using the original name. The following example is used for the first update required by EC D19383A. -- download d19383a1.ec from the 3466 ftp directory to DOS -- download nsm.3466.3.1.0.40.bff from the 3466 ftp directory to DOS. Note: in this example the periods in the original name were preserved. The save dialog on Window NT translate all but the last period to underscores. Presumably, this is to make it follow the typical Window/Dos naming convention. Any filename could be used. For clarity sake a name that preserves the meaning of the file should be used. -- insert the diskette into the diskette reader on the 3466 system -- enter the command 'dosdir' -- For this example the following names will be displayed: -- D19383A1.EC -- NSM346~1.BFF Notice that D9383A1.EC has been translated to uppercase and nsm.3466.3.1.0.40.bff has been hashed to NSM346~1.BFF. The following dosread commands are recommended to write the files to specific directories: -- dosread D19383A1.EC /tmp/3466/bin/d19383a1.ec -- dosread NSM346~1.BFF /usr/sys/inst.images/nsm.3466.3.1.0.40.bff # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- # What should be done with the files? # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Each file that is downloaded will require specific procedures. For the example provided above: -- /tmp/3466/bin/d19383a1.ec is a revised script to replace the original script d19383a.ec shipped with EC D19383A. Instructions are provided in a different document describing specific steps for using the script -- /usr/sys/inst.images/nsm.3466.3.1.0.40.bff is an installable file for the NSM software package. Specific instructions for installing software packages are provided in the file aixLppInstallHints.txt which exists on the /storage/adsm/3466 service ftp directory
