IBM WebSphere Application Server for Solaris

Installing on Solaris Operating Environment: WebSphere Application Server

Installing IBM WebSphere Application Server on Solaris Operating Environment

This article guides you to information especially for users of IBM WebSphere Application Server for Solaris.

Supported operating system versions

See the WebSphere Application Server Supported Hardware, Software, and APIs Web site at www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/doc/latest/prereq.html for the specific operating system versions supported by this version of IBM WebSphere Application Server.

Limitations when using Secure Sockets Layer with Apache Web Server on Solaris

There are limitations when you use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) with an Apache Web Server on Solaris. The plug-in executes the ap_http_method() API, but using Apache+OPENSSL returns "http" as a parseHostHeader class even if it is an SSL request. This causes the getRequestURL() method to always return "http://....".

Installation

Select installation and configuration steps according to the Web server and database you plan to use. The Quick installation option installs a supported Web server and database for you.

Custom installation:

  DB2 Oracle Sybase
IBM HTTP Server

iPlanet Web Server

Quick installation:

Solaris

The links below point to easy-to-follow steps for installing the WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition. The steps describe installation that uses a graphical user interface. WebSphere Application Server also offers silent installation. See the article Selecting steps for silent installation for more information.

If you are using the Merant driver with your installation, see the article Installing Merant SequeLink for use with IBM WebSphere Application Server, Advanced Edition and Oracle on Solaris.

The links below point to easy-to-follow steps for installing the WebSphere Application Server, Standard Edition. The steps describe installation that uses a graphical user interface. WebSphere Application Server also offers silent installation. See the article Selecting steps for silent installation for more information.

You can install WebSphere Application Server by using either the Custom Installation option or the Typical Installation option. The Custom Installation option allows you to choose among various supported Web servers and databases and configure WebSphere Application Server specifically for those choices. The Typical Installation option automatically installs and configures the IBM HTTP Server and WebSphere Application Server for you. (You will need to install a database separately before you install WebSphere Application server by using this option, however.)

The steps describe installation that uses a graphical user interface. WebSphere Application Server also offers silent installation. See the article Selecting steps for silent installation for more information.

Note: Minimizing the installation window can cause failures.

When installing WebSphere Application Server V4.0, if you minimize the installation window and again maximize it, the installation option panel becomes hidden behind the installation window. This is a known problem with Motif on Solaris and IBM Software Development Kit window tooling.

If the installation window is minimized, resize it or click Alt+F3 upon restoration to view the Install Option panel again.
