Using the InfoCenter

Information, hints, tips and help related to using the InfoCenter.

How do I bookmark?

Bookmarking a Web page that uses frames is a quick two-step process:

  1. Right-click anywhere in the frame that you want to bookmark.
  2. Select Add Bookmark if you are using Netscape Navigator.
Select Add to Favorites if you are using Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer.

The above instructions could vary with different browser versions.

Also, some browsers automatically assign a unique bookmark name based upon the page name -- but some do not. Consider renaming the bookmark to reflect the page content; otherwise, you might replace any previous InfoCenter bookmarks.

When you use your new bookmark, your browser opens the specific page that you selected when you created the bookmark without opening the other frames that were displayed originally.

What browsers are supported?

You access the InfoCenter with a Web browser, a tool that interprets and displays information. The InfoCenter supports browsers Netscape Navigator 4.0 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher. In addition, JavaScript must be enabled in the browser. If you use a different or earlier version of a browser, your pages may format differently and some functions may not work correctly. Also, the InfoCenter uses Java applets to create the Search and the Table of Contents. Not all browsers support these applets. Therefore, there is an alternate HTML-based Table of Contents that you may select to use if you have trouble with the Java-based Table of Contents.

How do I navigate the InfoCenter?

The InfoCenter uses frames to help you navigate through the content. The left frame (navigation bar) acts as a table of contents. The right frame shows you the information. This is the frame you will most likely want to bookmark or print. The top frame is the InfoCenter masthead. You can use it to perform different functions within the InfoCenter. Finally, the bottom frame is the InfoCenter footer, and contains options for showing the Java or HTML version of the navigation bar, and external links to resources on the internet.

The navigation bar at the left is available in both a JavaTM version and an HTML version. Click the appropriate icon in the footer bar below the navigation bar to select the one you prefer. In the Java version, click the arrow next to a topic to expand the list of subheadings. Click it again to hide the expanded list.

What if the navigation bar does not work?

The default navigation bar is the Java version. If the navigation bar is blank, you may not have Java support enabled in your browser, or you may be using a browser that does not support Java. Click the HTML icon in the footer to use the HTML version of the navigation bar.

How do I print information from the InfoCenter?

Because you may want to read and work with hardcopy information, the InfoCenter includes PDF (Portable Document Format) files of topics that you can view and print. You can print PDF files of all pages listed under most major topics.

To print, click the Print this topic link on the page or in the navigation bar. Note that the quality of printed graphics in the PDF files may not be as good as the quality that you see online with your Web browser.

To print an individual article in the InfoCenter, follow one of these steps:

This allows you to print the individual article without including the information in the left frame.

How do I search the InfoCenter?

Click Search in the top frame of the InfoCenter. The navigation bar will be replaced with one containing a Java search applet. The search instructions page will load in the right-hand frame, which contains instructions and assistance for using search. Type a word or phrase into the field and click the Search button.

You must have Java enabled in a supported browser to use this feature.

What is the Web Library (in the footer)?

If you are connected to the internet, clicking on Web Library in the footer will launch a new browser window and open the Library page of your IBM WebSphere product. The Library page typically contains the latest version of documentation such as release notes, README files, specification sheets, installation guides, and instruction manuals. There may also be links to related white papers and IBM Redbooks.

What is the Web Site (in the footer)?

If you are connected to the internet, clicking on Web Site in the footer will launch a new browser window and open the main Web site of your IBM WebSphere product. The Web site contains the latest news and information about your WebSphere product, including support, downloads, documentation, services, events, etc.

How do I adjust the browser font size?

A cascading style sheet (CSS) governs the appearance of the InfoCenter. However, the text size remains flexible. The text is displayed in the size indicated in the user's Web browser settings.

The instructions for changing the font size vary among browser brands and versions. Consult the browser product documentation for instructions. The options are typically called "Text size" (Microsoft Internet Explorer) and "Increase Font" (Netscape browsers), but are subject to change.
