Last updated 10/17/2002

WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0.x on Solaris provides Java (TM) 2 SDK Version 1.3.0.3 with the WebSphere Application Server Advanced Edition and Advanced Single Server Edition products. These products can run using Java 2 SDK Version 1.3.1.

To use Java 2 SDK Version 1.3.1 with a WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0.x product:

  1. Obtain the SDK 1.3.1 product. You can download the SDK from the Web site of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
  2. Install the SDK 1.3.1 product into a new subdirectory of $WAS_HOME (the root directory for WebSphere Application Server).

The SDK installation program names the new subdirectory j2sdk1_3_1. Installation instructions accompany the SDK 1.3.1 product and are available on the Web site of Sun Microsystems, Inc.

  3. Create the following new subdirectory: $WAS_HOME/ j2sdk1_3_1/ibm_bin
  4. Copy all the files from the $WAS_HOME/java/ibm_bin directory to the new $WAS_HOME/ j2sdk1_3_1/ibm_bin directory.
  5. If the $WAS_HOME/java/ibm_lib directory exists, create the following new subdirectory: $WAS_HOME/ j2sdk1_3_1/ibm_lib
  6. Copy the following files from $WAS_HOME/java/ibm_lib/ directory to $WAS_HOME/ j2sdk1_3_1/ibm_lib/ directory.
    	ir.idl
    	orb.idl
  7. Copy the $WAS_HOME/java/jre/lib/orb.properties to $WAS_HOME/ j2sdk1_3_1/jre/lib/ directory.
  8. Copy all the files from the $WAS_HOME/java/jre/lib/ext directory to the $WAS_HOME/ j2sdk1_3_1/jre/lib/ext directory.
  9. Copy the following files from the $WAS_HOME/java/jre/lib/sparc directory to the $WAS_HOME/ j2sdk1_3_1/jre/lib/sparc directory:
    	liborb.so
    	liborb_g.so
  10. Copy the following files from $WAS_HOME/java/lib/ directory to $WAS_HOME/ j2sdk1_3_1/lib/ directory.
    	ibmtools.jar
    	ir.idl
    	orb.idl
  11. Copy the file $WAS_HOME/java/jre/lib/security/java.security to the $WAS_HOME/ j2sdk1_3_1/jre/lib/security directory.
  12. Make sure you maintain all of the same access rights.
  13. Rename the current java directory to, for example, java1.3.0.
  14. Rename the j2sdk1_3_1 directory to java.

Note: The JDK is provided as an internal component of WebSphere Application Server. IBM provides maintenance of this component by shipping PTFs. Our goal is to provide customers with a tested and stable operating environment. IBM does not recommend replacing this component outside our product maintenance. Our shipped version of the JDK may be required to be installed when submitting a problem to IBM.

You need an e-fix to run the WebSphere Application Server Version 4.0.x with JDK 1.3.1_05 and higher. Please contact IBM representative for more information.
