Installing IBM WebSphere Application Server for Linux (Intel processor)

This article directs you to information especially for users of IBM WebSphere Application Server for Linux.

Supported operating system versions

See the WebSphere Application Server Supported Hardware, Software, and APIs Web site at www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/doc/latest/prereq.html for the specific operating system versions supported by this version of IBM WebSphere Application Server.

Using Secure Sockets Layer enabled plug-in with Apache Web Server on RedHat 7.1

If you are using Apache Web Server on RedHat 7.1, after you enable the plug-in with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), you must set the LD_PRELOAD environment variable to the value /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 before starting the Apache Web Server.

For example, if you are using the korn shell, enter the following value before starting the Apache Web Server:

export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2

Installation

You can install WebSphere Application Server by using either the Custom Installation option or the Typical Installation option. The Custom Installation option allows you to choose among various supported Web servers and databases and configure WebSphere Application Server specifically for those choices. The Typical Installation option automatically installs and configures the IBM HTTP Server and WebSphere Application Server. (You will need to install a database separately before you install WebSphere Application server by using this option, however.)

Due to the limitations of the Linux kernel, create the database on a remote database server to avoid the out of memory errors that are generated in the stderr.log file when using business applications. (For example: the sample Trade 2 Application using DB2.) If possible, create the WebSphere Application Server administrative database on a remote database server to facilitate a better long run environment.

The steps describe installation that uses a graphical user interface. WebSphere Application Server also offers silent installation. See the article Selecting steps for silent installation for more information.

Note: When you install WebSphere Application Server Advanced Edition Version 4.0.x on a German SuSE Linux 7.3 platform, you see a "datei nicht" message following the Choose Location panel, and the installation cannot continue. To work around this problem, install WebSphere Application Server Advanced Edition Version 4.0.x using the English locale instead of the German one. Once the installation is completed, change the locale to the German locale by issuing the commands export LC_ALL=de_DE and export LANG=de_DE.

Data access

The article 6.6.14.0: Properties of JDBC and data source providers provides operating system-specific information related to data access, such as where to find a database driver in its default location for your operating system.

IBM WebSphere Application Server for Linux (Intel processor)

This article tells you where to find information especially for users of IBM WebSphere Application Server on Linux. Because the product differs little on various operating systems, most of the product documentation is non-specific with respect to operating systems.

  IBM WebSphere Application Server Version 3.5 for Linux is based on Version 3.5.1 of the Application Server code. For now, disregard documentation sections that are marked as applicable to Version 3.5.2 or later.
