Some Web applications are front ends to traditional, non-Web applications. See the What are enterprise applications? article for a description of applications supported by WebSphere Application Server. The J2EETM architecture organizes applications into reusable components, and provides underlying services (in the form of containers) for different component types. The process of assembling the various pieces of a J2EE application involves specifying such container settings as security, Java Naming and Directory Interface lookups, and remote connectivity. J2EE applications also require deployment descriptors that are Exensible Markup Language (XML) text files to define the operating parameters and the components that comprise the application.
