1.0 About this release

The latest version of this document is available at http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/rationalsdp/v7/rcl/701/docs/readme/readme.html

This release contains updates for the version 7.0 release of IBM® Rational® License Server for Windows. This release includes the updates contained in all earlier interim fixes and fix packs:

Rational License Server V7.0, and later, is backward compatible with client products that use Rational Common Licensing from earlier releases. Support for serving license keys to clients which have installed Rational Product version 2003.xx is included.

For information on Rational License Server V7.0.1 for Linux and UNIX, see the readme file located in the associated download package.

1.1 New in this release

IBM® Rational® License Server for Windows extends Floating license support for IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform products built on the Eclipse open-source framework. This family of desktop products, including IBM Rational Application Developer, IBM Rational Software Architect, and other related version 7.0 products and above, includes support for floating license keys (powered by FLEXlm software) that enable administrators to manage and enforce licensing across the enterprise.

Floating license enforcement is an optional licensing feature for Rational Software Delivery Platform tools. Floating license enforcement enables administrators to prevent the enterprise from becoming out of compliance with purchased license agreements.

Note: Rational License Server for Linux and UNIX, Version 7.0.0.1 and later also includes support for Floating license enforcement for IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform products built on the Eclipse open-source framework.

2.2 Software requirements

Operating system

The following Windows operating systems are supported for this product:

2.3 Other requirements

2.4 Installation instructions for Windows

Note: Make sure that you have a current backup of your Registry and system directories before running the installation program.

The Setup wizard uses C:\Program Files\IBM Rational as the default installation path. If your C:\ drive lacks sufficient free disk space, either specify another drive or make space available on the default drive. A C:\ drive must exist on the license server regardless of where you install the Rational License Server software.

If an earlier release of IBM Rational License Server is already installed on your system, then you can install this release as an update. You do not need to uninstall an earlier release (from V2003.06.xx through V7.0.1). This release is stand-alone; you do not need to install Rational License Server V7.0 before installing this release.

Restrictions:

To download Rational License Server, Version 7.0.1:

  1. Go to the IBM site for Rational support, Downloads and updgrades: http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/support/upgrades/index.html.
  2. Locate Rational License Server in the product name list, and then click the Continue link.
  3. Depending on how you purchased your software and your maintenance agreement, select a link to Passport Advantage Online, IBM Software Group OEM portal, or the Rational Product Release area.
  4. Select Rational License Server V7.0.1 eAssembly and follow instructions for download.
  5. Extract the compressed file in an appropriate directory. For example, choose to extract to C:\temp.

To install the release as an update or stand-alone product:

  1. Log in as a user with administrator rights on the local computer on which you want to install the product.
  2. In the location where you extracted the release, double-click setup.exe.
  3. In the LaunchPad, click Install IBM Rational License Server.
The IBM Rational Setup Wizard opens.
  4. Click Next > Next.
  5. Read any product-specific warnings, and then click Next.
  6. Choose to accept or not to accept the Rational software license agreement in the Software License Agreement page.
  7. The Destination Folder page specifies the directory where you want to install the Rational License Server software. Click Change to modify the location, and then click Next.
  8. Click Install on the Ready to Install the Program dialog to begin the installation.
  9. A Restart Windows page opens if the Setup wizard needs to restart your computer. If files required for the installation are in use during the Setup program and if the program needs to install shared components on your computer, the Setup wizard may need to restart your computer.

Select Restart or Don’t Restart. If you select Don’t Restart, the wizard reminds you that the installation cannot complete until Windows restarts.

After Windows restarts, log on as the same user. If you do not, the installation does not complete correctly. The second part of the installation process starts automatically after you log on.

  10. When the Setup wizard Completed window opens, we recommend that you select the Show me the readme file option to review the current information related to features and known issues. In addition, you can select Take me to IBM developerWorks®. Click Finish to complete the installation.

Note: Install the floating license keys on the license server before you start the license server. For information on installing floating license keys, see the IBM Rational License Management Guide.

2.5 Uninstalling Rational License Server

You cannot revert to an earlier version of Rational License Server (for example, Version 7.0) by uninstalling Version 7.0.1. You must uninstall the entire product. After uninstalling, you can reinstall the version 7.0 package.

Before you uninstall Rational License Server, Version 7.0.1, complete the following steps:

  1. Log in with a user account that has the same privileges as the account that was used to install the packages to be uninstalled.
  2. Close Rational License Server.

To uninstall Rational License Server, Version 7.0.1 on Windows systems:

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Select Rational License Server, and then click Remove.

3.0 Fixes contained in this release

This release contains fixes for the following APARs:

This release contains fixes for the following issues:

4.0 Known limitations, problems, and workarounds

This section describes limitations present in the V7.0.1 release.

4.1 LMGRD.exe shows 99% usage and rational.exe does not launch, when License Server is installed after RPT/RFT v6.0

The License Manager service uses the rational_server_perm.dat and rational_server_temp.dat files.
The path plus filename of the rational_server_perm.dat and rational_server_temp.dat file cannot exceed 128 characters.
The License Server must be installed in a location so as not to exceed this limit.
The service may fail to start if this limit is exceeded.

Workaround:

1. Create a folder c:\Program Files\IBM\Rational\common.
2. Copy rational_*.dat to this common folder.
3. Run regedit and modify the paths in HKLM\Software\Flexlm License Manager\Flexlm license manager\License key to match the path in step 1.
4. Modify the paths the following keys to match the path in step 1:

HKLM\Software\Rational Software\Licensing\1.0\LicensePerm
HKLM\Software\Rational Software\Licensing\1.0\LicensePermServer
HKLM\Software\Rational Software\Licensing\1.0\LicenseTemp
HKLM\Software\Rational Software\Licensing\1.0\LicenseTempServer

4.2 Licadmin.exe crash on vista 64 bit system

The licadmin.exe application will not run on 64 bit Windows Vista operating systems. The problem does not exist on 32 bit Vista systems.
