1.0 About this release

The latest version of this document is available at http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/rationalsdp/v7/im/1005/docs/readme/readme.html.

In addition, see the release notes for version 1.0 of IBM Installation Manager to learn about its new features and any limitations or problems known at the time of its release. The release notes for version 1.0 are available at http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/rationalsdp/v7/im/70/docs/readme/readme.html

IBM® Installation Manager is a program that helps you install, update, modify, and uninstall packages on your workstation. This update contains fixes to version 1.0, version 1.0.0.2, and version 1.0.0.3 releases of IBM Installation Manager. You can use Installation Manager to perform the following tasks:

1.1 New in this release

Rollback support

IBM Installation Manager Version, 1.0.0.5 offers rollback support. Using the rollback feature, you can remove an update to a package, reverting to a previous version.

During the rollback process, Installation Manager must access files from the earlier version of the package. By default, these files are stored on your system when you install a package. If you changed the default setting or deleted the files using the Remove Stored Files option on the Roll Back preferences page, Installation Manager will require access to your installation repository or media. If you installed the product from a repository, you must have listed in your Preferences (File > Preferences > Repositories) the repository from which you installed the previous version of the product. If you installed the product from CDs or other media, they must be available when you use the rollback feature.

Use the rollback feature if you have applied an update to a product package, and decide later that you want to remove the update and revert to the earlier version of the product. When you use the rollback feature, the Installation Manager uninstalls the updated resources, and reinstalls the resources from the previous version. You can only roll back one version level at a time.

When you roll back to an earlier version of a package, it will be restored with same features that were associated with that version. Use the Modify Packages wizard to add and remove features.

Support browsing to files of supported extensions

Handling of local repositories has changed to support browsing to a file in addition to a directory. The supported files are repository.config, diskTag.inf, *.jar, and *.zip. You must browse to the repository.config file in a directory to open the directory repository, or browse to the diskTag.inf file of a disk image to open a repository of extracted disk images. Entering the string of a directory for a directory repository continues to be supported; it is not possible to browse to create this string, so automation will continue to work without changes.

Automatic installation of licenses

Automatic installation of Authorized user licenses is now available. If an authorized user license (Package enablement kit, or Permanent license key with agreement) offering is in a connected repository, it will be automatically installed during the associated product installation. To do this, add both the package repository and the lic.jar file to the list of connected repositories before initially installing the package. Additionally, a system administrator can populate an enterprise repository with both the Package and the License key and agreement using the IBM Packaging Utility and installations from this repository will install the package as well as the licenses.

1.2 Fixed in this release

Upgrading from a "clean" install of Installation Manager Version 1.0.0.3 to Version 1.0.0.4 described in tech note http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?&uid=swg21264711 has been fixed.

2.0 Installation information

For information about installing IBM Installation Manager, refer to the installation guide for products that are part of the IBM Rational® Software Development Platform. You can download the most recent release notes, readmes, and product documents from http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/support/documentation.

Note: Linux® users must eliminate empty spaces from their installation paths for the IBM Installation Manager. The installation will fail on Linux if any empty spaces are included in the path for IBM Installation Manager.

Note: On Windows Vista, IBM Installation Manager must be run with administrator privileges. From the Start menu, locate IBM Installation Manger, right-click the program shortcut and click Run as administrator.

Important note about upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista: If you plan to upgrade your Microsoft Windows XP operating system to Windows Vista and IBM Installation Manager is currently installed, refer to the instructions on the Support Web site, http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21257411.

3.0 Limitations

This section describes limitations specific to this release.

3.1 Launchpad: nonsupported browser error

The launchpad does not support Mozilla Firefox® V1.6; the supported range is V1.7 or higher.

4.0 Known limitations, problems, and workarounds

This section describes known limitations and problems specific to this release and any workarounds that are available.
4.1 Privileges for Packages Running on Windows Vista
4.2 Error message during session finalization
4.3 MD5 errors when Apache configuration file contains AddHandler imap-file map
4.4 Run or Debug Eclipse instance causes licensing errors
4.5 Could not install bundle...has already been installed from...
4.6 Can not uninstall the IBM Installation Manager after uninstalling

4.1 Privileges for Packages Running on Windows Vista

Check your packages' release notes to learn the required privileges. For example, Rational Software Modeler does not require administrative privileges while Rational Performance Tester and Rational Functional Tester both must be "Run as administrator".

4.2 Error message during session finalization

If two or more packages have been installed into the same package group and one of those package versions is 7.0.0.0  while the other package version is 7.0.0.1, the installation may complete with a message windows that states:

"Problem during session finalization, and Validation of Eclipse installation configuration failed because it has unsatisfied bundle constraints."

Workaround: You can resolve this problem by updating all of the packages in the package group to version 7.0.0.3.

4.3 MD5 errors when Apache configuration file contains AddHandler imap-file map

The string ".map." in a filename can cause the Apache Web server to perform a translation on the file contents before sending to the client. For example, for Apache 2.2 this can happen by adding the line into an .htaccess file in a directory served:
AddHandler imap-file map

The default configuration for some Apache installations is for AddHandler to be applied generally. As a workaround, comment out the "AddHandler imap-file map" line in the configuration files that affect the repositories used by IBM Installation Manager and IBM Packaging Utility.

This incorrect configuration will cause of an error message that looks like this:

Downloading plugin com.ibm.etools.sfm.mft.uri.map.nl1_7.0.0.v200610130814.
Downloading 'http://servername.com/ccb/Offerings/wdz70/20061013_1017/repository/plugins/com.ibm.etools.sfm.mft.uri.map.nl1_7.0.0.v200610130814.jar'
- to -
'D:\SDP70Shared\tmp\cicdip\v\md5\2aa842bc2558c018304a60446ddb2d3a'.
Table of contents digests differs from digest of downloaded file.

4.4 Run or Debug Eclipse instance causes licensing errors

If a licensed product (Rational Software Modeler, for example) is used as an Eclipse plugin development environment (PDE), the launched Eclipse instance might not succeed in checking out a license. This error will appear when running the licensed product (Rational Software Modeler), and you attempt to launch a new version of Eclipse using File > Run > Run... > Eclipse Application.

This will occur if the Installation Manager application data location is not in the default "English" location of C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager (Windows) or /var/ibm/InstallationManager (Linux).

The error is typically found on Windows systems that do not use the English path for 'All Users/Application Data'. The Linux version of this string is not translated so this error rarely occurs on Linux.

This issue happens because the Installation Manager application data folder is recorded in the config.ini file (C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP70\configuration\config.ini by default) in the cic.appDataLocation property. The config.ini file is not used in the launched Eclipse instance.

Workaround: Select Use an existing config.ini file as a template on the runtime config tab. This forces the runtime instance to use the same config.ini file used by the target IDE.

4.5 Could not install bundle...has already been installed from...

After you launch a product that has been installed into an existing version of Eclipse, you might see the following error in the Eclipse error log view:

Could not install bundle ../../../../../Program Files_IBM/SDP70Shared/plugins/org.junit_3.8.1/ Bundle "org.junit" version "3.8.1" has already been installed from: update@plugins/org.junit_3.8.1/
This error is a result of the product having one or more features with plug-ins that are already included in the existing Eclipse in. Installation Manager must install the features from the product because they contain other plug-ins that are not part of the existing Eclipse.

Workaround:  There is no workaround. The messages are informational only and do not affect running the product.

4.6 Can not uninstall the IBM Installation Manager after uninstalling multiple products at the same time

If you have uninstalled multiple products at the same time, and if two or more of the products used enrolled permanent licenses, Installation Manager cannot be uninstalled. When using the Add/Remove programs utility on Windows or /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/_uninst/uninstaller.bin on Linux to uninstall Installation Manager, an error message is displayed and Installation Manager cannot be uninstalled.

"Before you can uninstall IBM Installation Manager, you must uninstall all products that were installed by it"

Workaround: To ensure that there are no packages remaining, launch Installation Manager, select Uninstall Packages, and verify that there are no packages to uninstall. Close Installation Manager and remove its application data directory, which is typically located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager on Windows or at /var/ibm/InstallationManager on Linux. Next, uninstall IBM Installation Manager again using the Add/Remove programs utility on Windows or /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/_uninst/uninstaller.bin on Linux.
