1.0 Overview

This document describes how to install a downloaded version of IBM^® 32-bit Runtime Environment for Java^™ 2, v1.4.2 SR9 update for IBM Rational^® Application Developer for WebSphere Software, Version 6.0.1.2 and IBM Rational Software Architect, Version 6.0.1.2. This document also links to instructions that describe how to create a local mirror of your product update server.

2.0 Installation prerequisites

To download, extract, and install the update, you will require 400 MB of disk space.

Before you can install this update, you must install:

1. IBM Rational Product Updater 6.0.2

   If you use the default update site preferences, IBM Rational Product Updater 6.0.2 is automatically installed when you search for updates or optional features. However, if you change the default update site preferences by clicking Preferences > Update Sites, you must restore the default settings before you can install the update.

   IBM Rational Product Updater 6.0.2 is available for download at: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/rationalsdp/updater/60/zips/rpu_602.zip. 2. One of the following updates:
   • Rational Application Developer Fix Pack 6.0.1.2

     Installation instructions for Rational Application Developer Fix Pack 6.0.1.2 are available at www3.software.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/rationalsdp/rad/60/install_instruction/6012/install.html.

   • Rational Software Architect Fix Pack 6.0.1.2

     Installation instructions for Rational Software Architect Fix Pack 6.0.1.2 are available at www3.software.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/rationalsdp/rsa/60/install_instruction/6012/install.html.

To verify the current version numbers of the product and installed interim features:

1. Start Rational Product Updater:
   • On Windows operating systems, click Start > Programs > IBM Rational > Rational Product Updater.
   • On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 (GNOME desktop environment), open the main menu and click Programming > Rational Product Updater.
   • On SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0 (K Desktop Environment), open the main menu and click IBM Rational > Rational Product Updater.

2. Click the Installed Products tab.

3.0 Installing the update

Install the update with the same user account that installed the product.

Restrictions:

• The product cannot be open when you install this update.
• On Windows^® operating systems, you must use an account with Administrator privileges. On Linux^® operating systems, you must log in as root.

To install the update, complete the following steps:

1. Start Rational Product Updater:
   • On Windows operating systems, click Start > Programs > IBM Rational > Rational Product Updater.
   • On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 (GNOME desktop environment), open the main menu and click Programming > Rational Product Updater.
   • On SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0 (K Desktop Environment), open the main menu and click IBM Rational > Rational Product Updater.

Note: On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0, if you use a desktop environment other than the default, the product shortcuts might not appear in the default location.


2. Click Preferences > Update Sites.
3. Navigate to the following file for your specific product:
   • For Rational Application Developer: temp_dir\rad\policy_6012_JRE_Update.xml
   • For Rational Software Architect: temp_dir\rsa\policy_6012_JRE_Update.xml
   where temp_dir is the location of the extracted update.
4. Click OK.
5. Click Find Updates.


If your computer does not have Internet access, or cannot connect to the live IBM update server, a warning appears in Rational Product Updater that states that other update sites are not available. You can ignore this warning if you installed IBM Rational Product Updater 6.0.2.

If your computer has Internet access and can connect to the live IBM update server, and if Rational Product Updater requires an update, you are prompted to install it before you can continue. Click OK. Rational Product Updater installs the update, restarts, and retrieves a list of available updates.


6. Select IBM 32-bit Runtime Environment for Java 2, v1.4.2 SR9.
7. Click Install Updates.
8. In the License Agreement window, read the license agreement and, if you accept the terms and conditions, click I accept the terms in the license agreement; then click OK.


After the installation is complete, Rational Product Updater lists the installed updates on the Installed Products page.


9. Close Rational Product Updater.

4.0 Installing product updates from a command line

You can install product updates, such as interim fixes, fix packs, and refresh packs, from a command line so that you do not have to monitor or input information during the installation.

5.0 Creating a local mirror of the update server

You might want to create a local mirror of the update server in the following situations:

• You administer a set of product installations and want to control which updates are available to users.
• You administer a set of product installations that do not have direct access to the Internet.

For instructions on how to create a local mirror of the update server for your product updater, refer to the instructions for your product using the URL that is shown in the following table:

6.0 Uninstalling the update

Uninstall the update with the same user account that installed the product.

Restrictions:

• The product cannot be open when you uninstall the update.
• On Windows operating systems, you must use an account with Administrator privileges. On Linux operating systems, you must log in as root.

To uninstall the update, complete the following steps:

1. Start Rational Product Updater:
   • On Windows operating systems, click Start > Programs > IBM Rational > Rational Product Updater.
   • On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 (GNOME desktop environment), open the main menu and click Programming > Rational Product Updater.
   • On SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0 (K Desktop Environment), open the main menu and click IBM Rational > Rational Product Updater.

Note: On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0, if you use a desktop environment other than the default, the product shortcuts might not appear in the default location.


2. Click the Rollbacks tab. An inventory of installed product updates and features is displayed on the Rollbacks page.
3. Select IBM 32-bit Runtime Environment for Java 2, v1.4.2 SR9.


Dependencies between updates are enforced automatically. If you select to roll back an update on which other installed updates depend, the dependent updates are also selected to roll back.


4. Click Roll Back Updates.
5. Close Rational Product Updater.

7.0 IBM Rational Software Support

When you contact IBM Rational Software Support, the support representative will require the versions of the installed products or interim features on your system.

To determine the versions, complete the following steps:

1. Start your product updater, as described in Step 1 of the installation prerequisites.
   
   
2. Click the Installed Products tab.
