  3. Why are some items in the Options dialog boxes grayed out?

Certain characteristics of the NC Navigator browser are controlled by the IBM Network Station Manager, an application that allows an administrator to centrally set and manage some features of the IBM Network Station. Any changes to these characteristics can only be made through the use of the IBM Network Station Manager, and can be made on a systemwide basis, groupwide basis, or for a specific user. Since these changes can only be made through the IBM Network Station Manager they are grayed out when viewed through the browser.
Characteristics of NC navigator that are controlled by the IBM Network Station Manager include:

  4. Is there an easy way to access the IBM Network Station Manager application?

On the Directory drop-down menu, there is a menu item which will start the IBM Network Station Manager for the host server system that your IBM Network Station was booted from. If you want to access the IBM Network Station Manager for another server system, you will need to enter the appropriate URL manually.
Please note that an appropriate level of authority is required to access certain tasks from the Setup Tasks menu in the IBM Network Station Manager.

  5. What preferences can I set to customize the NC Navigator?

There are some basic preferences that may be set by the user, such as fonts displayed, image loading options, home page, etc. These preferences may be set using the preference panels selected from the Options drop-down menu. Other settings are centrally controlled by the IBM Network Station Manager.

Back to the top of section

  6. How can I add a customized button on the IBM Network Station task bar to launch the browser with a specific web page?

To configure this type of button on the IBM Network Station task bar, the user should:

    1. Start the IBM Network Station Manager (available from the Directory drop-down menu).
    2. Select Startup from the Setup Task frame.
    3. Select Menu under Startup.
    4. Select either system, group, or user defaults.
    5. Scroll down to the NC Navigator Menu Items. Type a label in a blank "Menu item label" field, and a URL in the corresponding "URL" field.
    6. Once complete, click on the "Finish" button and close the IBM Network Station Manager.

The next time the user logs onto the IBM Network Station, the new button will be visible. Once selected, the web page the URL is targeting should appear within the browser. If the NC Navigator is already running, and this button is selected a new browser pane will appear with the web page loaded.

  7. How does the browser use the Java Virtual Machine (JVM)?

The NC Navigator, the IBM Desktop Launcher, and the Applet Viewer share the same JVM. The Desktop Launcher allows multiple applets to run concurrently with the single Java Virtual Machine provided with the IBM Network Station. The NC Navigator is simply one application using the Java Virtual Machine.

  8. Why is there a delay the first time a Java applet is started within the NC Navigator browser?

During this time the JVM, Desktop Launcher, and the Applet Viewer are loaded into memory. In order to run Java applets within the browser all three are necessary. These modules are not loaded until the first Java applet is executed in the browser. After the first applet is run these modules stay in memory, so subsequent applets start faster.

  9. What version of Java is supported by the NC Navigator in the current release?

The NC Navigator will support JDK 1.1.4.

  10. How can I display more information on the screen?

Back to the top of section

  11. How is the browser affected by the amount of memory on the IBM Network Station?

  12. How can the browser's memory requirements be reduced?

  13. Why are no images displayed?

  14. Why do I sometimes get a pop-up window that says the browser "has detected a .... /NAV/lock file"?

The "lock file" is used by the browser to prevent multiple copies of the browser from attempting to update items such as client certificates, bookmarks, and other items that are stored in the file system on a "per-user" basis. The browser creates the lock file when it starts up, and deletes it when it terminates normally. The browser stores the MAC address of the current IBM Network Station in the lock file, along with the current TCP/IP address.

Whenever the browser starts up, it checks for the existence of the lock file (normally, there should not be one). If a lock file exists, the browser compares the MAC address of the current IBM Network Station with the MAC address that is stored in the file. If they are the same, the browser assumes that the previous instance of the browser terminated abnormally and thus it is safe to proceed normally (because only one copy of the browser can run at a time on any IBM Network Station). However, if the MAC addresses are different, the browser assumes that another copy of the browser is currently being executed by the same userid on a different IBM Network Station, and thus it is not safe for it to make updates to its working files.

This pop-up message will occur if:

If you get this message, you will be able to continue using the browser if you click on OK, but you may not be able to save information that you enter using the Options drop-down menu.

If the user continues to get this message and just cannot figure out which IBM Network Station was used originally, the ultimate solution is to have the user manually delete the lock file, which is normally stored in the NAV subdirectory under the user's home directory. Deleting this file is harmless.

  15. Can NC Navigator display documents in languages other than English?

Yes. By default, the browser will display documents using a Western (Latin-1) encoding. This will work for English and western European languages. For other languages, if the document specifies which "document encoding" should be used, the browser will attempt to use that encoding instead. If the document is encoded with a language other than Latin-1, it may be necessary to tell the browser which encoding to use by clicking on Document Encoding on the Options drop-down menu, and then selecting the appropriate language.

Note: For the documents to display correctly using an encoding other than Latin 1, the fonts for the language must be available on the Network Station.
