Quick Start Guide

Step 1: Create an Account

This can be done on the registration page, which looks like this:

Enter the relevant information, and your account will be created.

Step 2: Download the Client Program

This can be done on the download page, which looks like this:

Select the appropriate download for your operating system. (You should generally select a 'direct download' link. The 'bittorrent' links require a bittorrent client.)

Step 3: Prepare and Run the Client Program

Follow the instructions on the download page for what to do with the download.
  • If the download is a simple archive (.zip or .tar.gz), then unpack it into a directory of your choosing, using a program like 7-Zip, WinZip, etc.
    • Afterwards, in the directory where you unpacked it, run intensity_client.bat (Windows) or intensity_client.sh (Linux). For example, this can be done by doubleclicking it in a file browser like Windows Explorer on Windows.
  • If the download is a .deb file, install the package using gdebi or a similar tool.
    • After installing the .deb, a menu item 'Syntensity' should appear under 'Games' in the main menu. Click it to run the client program.
After you start to run the client program, it may take a few seconds to load, and then you should see this:

This is the main menu. (You can navigate these menus by clicking on the links - lines ending with '...'. Pressing the escape key or the right mouse button can take you back to the previous menu.)

Step 4: Login to the Master Server

Click on 'log in...' in the main menu. This will show the login menu:

Click on the empty field next to 'username', and enter the username you selected when creating your account. (Be careful to keep the mouse over the field you are editing, as if you move it away, you will lose focus.) Then click on the empty field next to 'password' and enter your password. After that, click on 'log in'.

The login process may take a few seconds, after which you should see a 'Logged in successfully' notice in the upper left corner, and a new menu with several 'connection' options:

Step 5: Connect to a Server Instance

You can now connect to a server instance, which is a 'game server' running a game. In the current menu, click on 'connect to selected...'. This will connect you to a default game server (because you haven't selected one yet; for how to do that, see the introduction). Note: In newer versions of Syntensity, you may see an option 'connect to lobby...', as the first option. If you see that option, select it.

After clicking on the appropriate command, the client program will take a little time to set up the connection and so forth. During this time you may see some progress bars and informative messages.

When the connection is complete, you will have entered a world, and you may see something like this:

Note that you may be placed in a different part of the world, so you may see somewhat different scenery.

You can now press 'H' to begin the interactive tutorial. The tutorial will teach you the basic controls (for moving, looking, etc.). Doing the tutorial is recommended.

A summary of the controls explained in the tutorial also appears here:
  • Move the mouse to look around.
  • Use the arrow keys, numpad keys, or W, A, S, and D keys to move.
  • Pressing escape will bring up the main menu (from which you can change options like graphics and sound settings, see some help, quit, etc.)
  • Pressing and holding down tab will show a list of other people in the same world, and possibly some information about them.
  • Pressing T will let you type a text message. Press Enter to send it. It will be seen by everyone else in the same world.
  • Pressing space will make you jump a little in the air.
  • The mouse wheel will move the camera closer to or farther from your avatar.
  • 9 will toggle first person mode.
  • M toggles 'mouselook mode'.
Aside from these, every world can be very different, with different controls and rules.

The world you have entered has 'portals' - windows into other worlds (two appear in the screenshot above). Move close to a portal to see some text regarding it, and walk straight into it to enter that world.

Two of the worlds you can enter are as follows:
  • Action game:
    • Shoot by clicking the mouse. Change weapons with 1-4 (or middle mouse button). The weapons are:
      • Sniper gun: 3 shots to kill someone, unless you shoot their head ('headshot') for an instant kill.
      • Shotgun: Slow reload and close range, but doesn't need to be aimed accurately and can do a lot of damage.
      • Rockets: Do damage in an area around where they hit. Are slightly affected by gravity, so aiming at far-off targets is tricky.
      • Homing missiles: Can only be shot when you are 'locked' on a target. Will chase the target for a short while. Slower than rockets but do much more damage.
    • There are two teams, red and blue, and each team's goal is to take the other team's flag and bring it back to theirs. You get one point each time this is achieved.
    • There are two 'jump pads', that if you step on, will shoot you up into a higher area in the map.
    • Be careful of the automatic gun turret on the higher level, it can do a lot of damage.
    • The automatic gun turrets on the lower level will shoot rapidly, but the shots will only stun you briefly (making you slower, and easier for the other team to shoot at).
  • Sketch world:
    • Each person has a different color to draw with, which is done as follows:
      • Click in one place, then in another, to draw a line between them.
      • Click and hold down the button while moving the mouse, to draw other shapes.
      • Try pressing 'M' to toggle 'mouselook mode'. It might be easier to draw in one of the modes than the other.
      • Rightclick to stop drawing the current segment. Your next click will start a new segment.
      • Click on the tree to erase your drawings and randomly select a new color for you (do it repeatedly until you find a color you like)
