While with xorg-7.3 some could simply use the OS's input devices (mice, keyboards), xorg-7.4 now explicitely needs hald and dbusd. But this information is not provided in UPDATING and therefore some who isn't very familiar with changes in X11 will suffer from that fault. More dramatic is the incabability of switching back to FreeBSD's console! Having ran the X server once, some will never get back to a console. Even when dbud and hald are not started accidentally (as happened to me), I expect killing the X server via CTRL-ALT-BS (when configured by commenting out DontZap in xorg.conf). That doesn't work anymore. Also there is no chance switching back to any of the console screens via CTRL-ALT-F1 to F7 (as in my case): consoles are black/dark/unresponsive, no keyboard, no output, monitor signals 'no signal'. I can switch back to the tty bound by the xdm/Xorg server, but when simply testing X this ends up in a deadend. This behaviour occurs on three graphics card driver: nv, vesa and radeon/hd and on these FreeBSD type/versions: FreeBSD 8.0-CURRENT/amd64 (as builtworld today) FreeBSD 7.1-STABLE/amd64/i386 (as builtworld today) >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: From: Alex Goncharov To: "O. Last night I updated a desktop and have garbage (or call it a visual noise if you will) in my windows all the time now. Nevertheless, I upgraded a laptop -- and can't use X here at all: while the mouse pointer moves, the keyboard is "dead", until some number of key presses leads to a loud continuous beep; I can switch to the non-X virtual consoles but the beep continues and I have to reboot the system to kill the sound. Disabling HAL doesn't make things much better, although in my current configuration I don't have a continuous sound and can experiment. Putting `xev' into ~/.xsession, I observed that all (?) the keystrokes result in "keysym 0x0". Bottom line: the X system is unusable after the upgrade; no diagnostic tool that I tried provides a clue about how to make it work. -- Alex -- alex-goncharov@comcast.net -- Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-ports-bugs->freebsd-x11 Responsible-Changed-By: edwin Responsible-Changed-When: Mon Jan 26 19:53:02 UTC 2009 Responsible-Changed-Why: Over to maintainer (via the GNATS Auto Assign Tool) http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=131016 From: Maciej Suszko To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org, ohartman@zedat.fu-berlin.de Cc: Subject: Re: ports/131016: x11/xorg - xorg-7.4 renders system unusable! After an compilation orgy and the weirdness of an obvious false xcb-XXX compilation (xcb-proto etc needs to be recompiled BEFORE the suggested UPDATING step via portupgrade -rf libxcb is performed) X is up and running - but NO(!!!!) switching to any VT. This sucks. This is with driver 'nv' as with 'radeon'. Switching obviously works - I can switch vom ttyv7 keeping the X11-display to others - but they are black and the monitor is NO SIGNAL signalling. I can switch back to the tty keeping X11 without any problem. Having no VT/console is very bad :-( I also performed the steps for avoiding this useless 'hald/dbus' combination for my keyboard and mouse and it works now for me - but with the above mentioned result of not having access to my VT. I'll do the same with my desktop by the end of this week, I think. The obvious downside is that I can no longer do my weekly port upgrades, but I can leave without it, until the new X11 is reputed to be well functioning. This has been my first experience with so damaging an upgrade in FreeBSD and I will be much more conservative with port upgrades in the future; unfortunately if everybody is hesitant to be on the cutting edge, how will the problems be reported and fixed? It is interesting that in the port tree there are directories for (I assume less tested, less reliable) "devel" versions, of say, `firefox' and `emacs', but none of that sort for much more dangerous X11 stuff: $ ls -d www/firefox*devel editors/emacs*devel x11*/xorg-server*devel ls: x11*/xorg-server*devel: No such file or directory editors/emacs-devel/ www/firefox-devel/ Would be a good idea, I think. -- Alex -- alex-goncharov@comcast.net -- From: Harald Hanche-Olsen To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org, ohartman@zedat.fu-berlin.de Cc: Subject: Re: ports/131016: x11.xorg - xorg-7.4 renders system unusable! Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2009 14:04:20 +0100 (CET) I forgot one small but possibly important point. The "delayed event syndrome" applies not only to input events. For example, when a window is brought to the front, it often does not get repainted until I move the mouse a bit. And then, if it was partially obscured before, I can see more and more bits getting filled in as I move the mouse. - Harald From: Harald Hanche-Olsen To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org, ohartman@zedat.fu-berlin.de Cc: Subject: Re: ports/131016: x11.xorg - xorg-7.4 renders system unusable! Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2009 13:53:25 +0100 (CET) I can add my own two cents to this. If I run with Option AllowEmptyInput off, then the screen goes black, and I cannot regain any use of the console. Logging in over the network and killing the X server does not help. Upon reboot, I get the psychedelic screen reported by others. Sometimes the system hangs and I need to use the power button; other times it proceeds to reboot normally. If I run with Option AllowEmptyInput on, then I need to run hald, otherwise I have no keyboard or mouse input. With hald running, X events are often delayed. For example, running xev I see that clicking the mouse produces a ButtonPress event, but the corresponding ButtonRelease event is delayed until I move the mouse. I also often find that keyboard events are delayed until I move the mouse. I don't need to tell you how annoying this is ... Apart from this, however, with hald running I see no further problems. I run an Intel 845G chipset using xorg's intel video driver. After starting up X, the screen blanks with some garbage in the top few rows. The X process starts but xinit cannot talk to it and doesn't start any client. Switching consoles doesn't work, turning the system into a headless server. I can login remotely and kill xinit and the X process, but no change. "Option NoDRI" in the video driver section doesn't have any effect. I simply changed from the intel video driver to the vesa video driver in xorg.conf and all is fine (but of course noticeably slower). I don't use hald & friends, as the onboard devices of my box don't change very often. :-) Instead everything is hardwired and works fine - with the vesa driver. I am attaching: - current xorg.conf - the only delta between the intel and vesa video variant is the "Driver" line in the video device section. - Xorg.0.log for the intel case - Xorg.0.log for the vesa case Helge --ELM874647059-64009-0_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=xorg.conf Content-Description: /etc/X11/xorg.conf Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit # File generated by xorgconfig. # # Copyright 2004 The X.Org Foundation # # Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a # copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), # to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation # the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, # and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the # Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions: # # The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in # all copies or substantial portions of the Software. # # THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR # IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, # FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. Note that I have an USB keyboard and mouse connected to this system. I did the: # portupgrade -rf libxcb /usr/ports/UPDATING: > Add Option "AllowEmptyInput" "off" to your ServerLayout section Did nothing for me except caused lockups. Not before or after the "20090124: AFFECTS: users of x11-servers/xorg-server, sysutils/hal" update. Pasting only the essentials: ... Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "X.org Configured" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection # Had to add this after xorg 7.4 upgrade # USB devices (kb,mouse) would not be otherwise detected. Probably worth noting that I had to add the following lines to /boot/loader.conf: drm_load="YES" i915_load="YES" Otherwise drm would fail at startx. 7.3 and DRI worked fine without them. I have, however, disabled DRI for 7.4 since it turned out to be too erratic for my liking. Date: Fri, 6 Feb 2009 08:22:00 -0500 Hello, For what it's worth, I seem to be having similar problems on FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE-p2. In my case; however, I can use the mouse (a generic PS/2 style wheel mouse) but the keyboard beeps and sends random characters (mostly "d"'s...lots of them). I _am_ able to hit CTRL-ALT-F1 to escape out of the X Server and kill it. The keyboard works fine in console mode, and no O/S level panicks or crashes so far. I'm kind-of bummed that X is broken since this is my primary workstation. I guess I'll be using my laptop running Windows XP until this is sorted out. Thankfully the TightVNC server works fine, so I can access my X desktop via the TightVNC client on my notebook and still get work done. Good luck to the guys/gals who are (hopefully) busy fixing this. -- David C. Having been away for a whole year, I upgraded my system to 7.3-STABLE, blew away and rebuilt the ports with the latest ports tree, and the X server now works pretty good. My only complaint is that it often does not exit cleanly, and if I then kill -KILL it, I get psychedelic screen syndrome and must reboot. (OTOH, who wants to log out anyhow? It's a desktop machine in my office. I xlock it when I go home.) Not sure if I can follow up a lot more. I expect to get new hardware in the not too distant future, and then the problem just might evaporate. - Harald State-Changed-From-To: feedback->open State-Changed-By: pgollucci State-Changed-When: Thu Sep 16 19:36:04 UTC 2010 State-Changed-Why: Feedback received http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=131016 From: Harald Hanche-Olsen To: stefan@freebsd.org Cc: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: ports/131016: x11/xorg - xorg-7.4 renders system unusable!
