About this release

This chapter provides information about product installation and new features in IBM Rational ProjectConsole versions 7.0 through 7.0.3.

Installing or upgrading to this release

If you are installing IBM Rational products for the first time, or upgrading from an earlier release of Rational ProjectConsole, see the IBM Rational ProjectConsole Installation and Upgrade Guide

Upgrading from version 2003.06.15 or earlier

Note:
If you are upgrading from version 2003.06.15 or earlier, you must convert your security database to use IBM Cloudscape(TM). The tool to do this is accessible from the Rational ProjectConsole Maintenance Tool in version 2003.06.15. If you are upgrading from a release earlier than 2003.06.15, you must:
  1. Upgrade to version 2003.06.15 of Rational ProjectConsole.
  2. Run the Rational ProjectConsole Maintenance Tool. The tools detects whether you have any security databases that require conversion to Cloudscape. If any are present, there will be top level selection called Upgrade the ProjectConsole Security DB. If none of the security databases require upgrading, the menu option is not present.
  3. Choose the Upgrade the ProjectConsole Security DB option to convert the security databases to Cloudscape.
  4. Upgrade to version 7.0 of Rational ProjectConsole.

Temp folder must be empty before beginning an upgrade installation

Delete all files in the system /temp folder before upgrading to Rational ProjectConsole 7.0.2. Typically, this folder is found in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings

Upgrading Rational ProjectConsole for DB2

The minimum value of the DB2 transaction log is insufficient to support the upgrade to feature level 6 for Rational ProjectConsole version 7.0.3. To correct the issue:

  1. Go to the DB2 Control Center.
  2. Right-click the database and select Configure Database Logging > Logging Size.
  3. Change the size of each log file from 1000 to 10000.

Using IBM Rational documentation

The following sections describe sources from which you can obtain additional product documentation.

IBM developerWorks Rational

IBM developerWorks(R) Rational (http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rational/) is an online community that provides information and an exchange of ideas and best practices. Content on the site has been edited for quality and relevance, and organized by technology and process. There are also links to Web-based training. You can use the site for the following purposes:

Recommended technical articles and white papers

The following articles and white papers provide information relevant to configuring and using Rational ProjectConsole. They are available from IBM developerWorks Rational (http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rational/).

White papers on the Rational ProjectConsole Web site

The Rational ProjectConsole Web site provides links to white papers that provide information about measurement planning and links to some of the sample measurements provided with Rational ProjectConsole.

To view white papers on the Rational ProjectConsole Web site:

  1. In the left frame, from the Rational ProjectConsole navigation tree, expand the ClassicsCD.com Projects node.
  2. Expand the Additional ProjectConsole Resources node.
  3. Expand White Papers, and then click one of the following titles:

New features in Rational ProjectConsole 7.0.3

This section describes new and enhanced features in this release.

Migration to feature level 6

Rational ProjectConsole databases and schemas are based on Rational ClearQuest. With this release, feature level 6 replaces the feature level supported in earlier releases. Migration to feature level 6 is mandatory.

To upgrade to feature level 6, you must create an empty schema repository and user database and run the Rational ProjectConsole Maintenance Tool to upgrade your databases. For more information, see Maintenance Tool help.

New features in Rational ProjectConsole 7.0.3

This section describes new and enhanced features in this release.

IBM JRE support

For optimal use, the Rational ProjectConsole Designer and Dashboard applets require that IBM JRE be installed.

With Microsoft Internet Explorer, you are automatically directed to a location from which you can download the IBM JRE if it is not currently installed. Both Sun JRE and IBM JRE are supported.

If you are using the Firefox browser, you are not directed to the IBM JRE. In this case, you can use the Sun JRE.

To enable Mozilla, access the Java Plug-In Control Panel 1.4.2, navigate to the Browser tab, and click Enable Mozilla 1.1 or later.

Enhanced Rational Web Platform

This release supports the new Rational Web Platform (RWP), which is based on the embedded version of WebSphere Application Server. For information about Rational Web Platform, see the IBM Rational ProjectConsole Installation and Upgrade Guide.

Rational Web Platform

The Rational Web Platform (RWP) is supported only on server platforms; it is not supported on Windows(R) XP.

New security database

Cloudscape has replaced SQL Anywhere as the Rational ProjectConsole security database.

Announcements and changes

This section presents announcements and changes for this release.

New Start path

The Start path for Rational ProjectConsole has changed for this release. Here is the new path: Tools > Start > Programs > IBM Rational > IBM Rational ProjectConsole > ProjectConsole menu items

Rational ProjectConsole services renamed

In version 7.0.0.0, the names of installed ProjectConsole services have changed. Table 1 lists the old name and new name of each service. If you previously configured any of the Rational ProjectConsole services to log in using a domain account, you must modify the login parameters for the newly installed services to use the same domain login parameters that you used for version 2003.06.15 of the services.

Rational ProjectConsole Dashboard Server IBM Rational ProjectConsole Dashboard Server
Rational ProjectConsole Report Server IBM Rational ProjectConsole Report Server

Rational ProjectConsole server no longer requires a license

Rational ProjectConsole no longer checks out a license for the ProjectConsole server. ProjectConsole clients still require one license per client.

Rational ProjectConsole tutorials

Rational ProjectConsole tutorials are based on functionality and interfaces from version 2003.06.

No search function in Help

Because of a change in the tools used to generate on line Help for this release, the search function supported by Help in earlier releases of Rational ProjectConsole is no longer supported.

Accessibility features for Rational ProjectConsole

Accessibility features help users who have a physical disability, such as restricted mobility or limited vision, to use information technology products successfully.

Restrictions and guidelines

This chapter describes noteworthy restrictions and guidelines that affect the use of Rational ProjectConsole. It is divided into three sections:

General restrictions and guidelines

This section describes restrictions and guidelines that affect the use of Rational ProjectConsole.

If you are updating ProjectConsole from 7.0.2 and if you applied the work-around metioned in technote http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&q1=1389970&uid=swg21389970&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&cc=us&lang=all, you need to delete those two files you added manually before proceeding with updating to 7.0.3 release.

Migration error when non-ASCII characters are used in a repository folder name

If you are migrating from version 2005.05.00, any non-ASCII characters in the name of a Rational ProjectConsole repository that you are migrating will cause the migration to fail.

Workaround: Use ASCII names for your data repositories or migrate data to a repository with ASCII characters only, and then copy the migrated repository to a repository with non-ASCII characters in the name.

Compatibility issues

This section describes special compatibility issues that affect the use of Rational ProjectConsole and Rational ProjectConsole Template Builder with other Rational products and vendor products.

Compatibility with Rational products

This section describes the compatibility of Rational ProjectConsole with other Rational products.

Rational ProjectConsole installs as a stand-alone product

Beginning with version 7.0, Rational ProjectConsole is installed as a stand-alone product. In earlier releases, installation was done as part of a suite of products. The new installation strategy facilitates more efficient updates to individual products.

Rational ProjectConsole Template Builder, Report Server, and Collection Agents report on the same version of a product

For Rational ProjectConsole version 7.0 and 7.0.1, the Template Builder, Report Server, and collection agents can report on Rational products of the same version.

ProjectConsole's ability to collect from and report against earlier versions of Rational products is contingent on the backward compatibility of the individual Rational products. See the documentation for that product for more information.

Compatibility with vendor products

This section describes Rational ProjectConsole compatibility with vendor products.

Required settings for all browsers

To start the Designer or Dashboard for Rational ProjectConsole, you must enable all cookie types for your browser. This is required for all supported browser types. If cookies are disabled, you will receive an authentication error.

Rational ProjectConsole Template Builder comments in Microsoft Word 2003

Like Microsoft Word 2002, Word 2003 requires Markup to be turned on to display Word comments (and Rational ProjectConsole Template Builder commands). However, in this version of Template Builder, the default Markup is set to ON and the color is white, which makes markup invisible to the user. This does not affect comment functions for normal Word usage. Because Markup is now always set to ON in Template Builder, you can use the Show/Hide button in Microsoft Word to toggle the display of Template Builder commands. The placement of the cursor in relation to the marker is irrelevant in this version (this is different from Word 2002).
