About theWelcome Center

TheRS/6000 Welcome Center has been updated with new content and demos including a multimedia game.

The RS/6000 Welcome Center is a software package that provides a friendly introduction to the RS/6000 and AIX product families. It is designed to provide information about your new RS/6000 system and software, to facilitate quick setup and configuration, to demonstrate system capabilities and to provide links to other valuable resources of RS/6000 and AIX information such as service and support.

The Welcome Center is normally available for RS/6000 Systems as a no-charge, preinstall option on AIX 4.

The RS/6000 Welcome Center requires AIX Ultimedia Services/6000 (UMS) 2.1.4.0. You can run the Welcome Center on AIX 4 systems without UMS but the multimedia demos will not be enabled.

The Welcome Center can be installed just like any AIX install image. Follow the steps below to install it.

  2. Download the Welcome.bin install image to that directory.

  3. Read the license agreement..

  4. Issue the following command to install the Welcome Center
    installp -aXdWelcome.bin Welcome

in the directory where the install image resides.

The Welcome Center requires about 55 Mbytes of disk space and will be installed in the /welcome directory.

    ./welcome.start

These commands will launch the Netscape Navigator in an environment best suited for the Welcome Center.

  2. Browse through the Welcome Center at your convenience.

  3. When you are ready to leave the Welcome Center, you will see the following choices on the Exit Page.

    • Option 1: Keep Welcome Center in the startup sequence. The Welcome Center will remain for subsequent startups.

    • Option 2: Remove Welcome Center from the startup sequence. The Welcome Center will be removed from the startup sequence, but will be accessable from the AIX desktop environment.

    • Option 3: Remove Welcome Center from startup sequence and file system. The Welcome Center will be removed completely from your system. This option releases the space previously occupied by the Welcome Center files.
