Sign-Up Disks

Sign-Up Disks provide a way for potential customers to directly reach you. If you decide to offer this option, you will provide disks containing an Offer Page and .ISP file that allow the SBS Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) to dial direct to your Sign-Up Server.

When you build a Sign-Up Disk, you provide the components listed below. The disks should be clearly labeled with instructions like, "Run Setup.exe to see the Internet services offered by [Service Provider]." You can then distribute these disks to potential customers or to value-added resellers (VARs).

If you offer a CD-ROM, you may use the AutoRun feature, which automatically launches Setup.exe. The setup program starts ICW and the user sees an offer page (Setup.htm) similar to those on the Referral Server. If the user clicks the sign-up button on the Offer Page, ICW dials direct to your Sign-Up Server. Your customer sees your normal sign-up or registration HTML pages.

If you distribute Sign-Up Disks to VARs, create a separate set of instructions for them. Since VARs will not want to execute the program but only install it on customer machines, the instructions should include the following steps:

  1. Create a directory under Program Files.
    For example, c:\Program Files\ispSignUp.

  2. Copy the Sign-up Disk files into this directory.

  3. Create a shortcut to the Setup.exe file with an appropriate title (for example, "Click here for Internet Access.")
Components

The files listed below should be included in the root directory of your distribution media. You can obtain all of them in a single download from the Downloads page.

If you choose to distribute on CD-ROM, you can include the Autorun.inf file for the convenience of your customers. All other files are required on both media choices.

Setup.exe

The Setup.exe file is included with the Sign-Up Disk download. Do not customize it.

This application does not have a graphical user interface. Either the user runs it directly from the command line, or it is started by the Autorun.inf file. The application verifies that it is running on a Small Business Server and then starts the Internet Connection Wizard with the proper parameters.

Setup.htm

This is the offer that you create and distribute on the Sign-Up Disk. It is an HTML document with the accompanying images and HTML pages that you wish to include. You are not limited to using the Offer Page from the Referral Server, but your presentation must fit on the distribution media you select, whether that is a diskette or CD-ROM. This page must meet the following requirements:

  • The maximum size is full-screen on an 800x600 display. The page is therefore fully visible on the lowest resolution display.

  • A sign-up button must be clearly displayed. This button is linked (HREF) to the Setup.isp file on the diskette. Clicking the button causes ICW to receive the ISP file and connect to your Sign-Up Server.
setup.isp

This is the same file distributed with the Offer Page by the server running the Microsoft Internet Referral Service. This file is created with the ISP File Wizard. See Additional Information for the ISP file format.

autorun.inf

This file is optional, but it is useful for a CD-ROM distribution. When the user inserts the CD, Setup.exe runs automatically.

The entire file contents (three lines) are listed below.

[AutoRun]
open=setup.exe
icon=setup.exe,1

The second line runs Setup.exe and the third line specifies an icon resource in Setup.exe to use for the CD-ROM drive in Windows Explorer.

The Autorun.inf file is included with the Sign-Up Disk download. Do not customize this file.
