CorelDRAW 5 incorporates a convenient feature called Styles, which, are handy shortcuts for quickly applying different sets of attributes to text or graphics. Although Corel VENTURA users are already familiar with this concept, many CorelDRAW users may not be aware of the advantages associated with styles. The focus of this document is not intended to be a tutorial on the use of styles, but rather to outline some of the issues surrounding the styles template. For tips on the use of styles, click Help, Contents, How to, Use Styles from within CorelDRAW. The following messages are usually an indication that some maintenance is required to the CorelDRAW styles template. Even if the user is not familiar with the use of styles and does not normally create custom styles in a document, the styles template can be altered by opening new files from templates, by changing default settings, such as line widths and font styles, or by opening or importing documents from other users who do use various styles in their documents. If left unchecked, the styles saved with each document can increase greatly in number, amounting to dozens or even hundreds, instead of the 6 styles that are saved with a document by default. The effect of this, depending on the system setup, can range from increased file size and slow opening or saving of documents, to any of the following messages when saving or opening files. You may encounter the following conditions when working with styles: The message, "The Styles in "YOURFILE.CDR" are different than the styles in CORELDRW.CDT. Do you wish to use the styles in CORELDRW.CDT?" may be generated when opening a file. This is not an error, but a warning that the styles template that is saved with the open document is not the same as the one CorelDRAW would use by default with a new document. If you do not wish to receive this notification with this file, perform the following steps: 1. Close CorelDRAW, and open File Manager or Windows Explorer. 2. Browse to the \COREL50\CONFIG\ directory on the drive where CorelDRAW is installed, and rename the CORELDRW.INI file to CORELDRW.OLD. Change to the \COREL50\DRAW\TEMPLATE\ directory, and rename the CORELDRW.CDT file to CORELDRW.OLD. These files are used to store CorelDRAW preferences and default styles, and they are automatically regenerated if CorelDRAW cannot find them during launch. 3. Start CorelDRAW, click Layout, Styles RollUp. The RollUp should display the 6 CorelDRAW default styles: Default Graphic Default Paragraph Text Default Artistic Text Bullet1 Bullet2 Bullet3. 4. Open the document and click Yes to the styles message. In the Styles RollUp, more than the original 6 styles will be displayed. 5. Click on the small button in the top-right of the Styles RollUp to get a flyout menu. Click Load, The Load Styles From Template dialog box appears, and the message "...the styles have changed, do you want to update the changes" may be generated, click No. Always respond No to any message asking to update CORELDRW.CDT. Click CORELDRW.CDT from file listing on the left side of the dialog box, and click OK. Once the new CORELDRW.CDT is loaded, save the file. As long as CORELDRW.CDT is not changed or updated from that point, this file will not display the styles message on opening again. Note: Renaming the file CORELDRW.CDT in step 2 will automatically cause the default styles template to be recreated, and all new files created from that point will not be subject to the conflicting styles message. However, a copy of the styles template is saved with every file. Thus, any files created before resetting CORELDRW.CDT will contain information from the old, overloaded styles template. This makes it necessary that steps 3-5 are completed for any older files that are opened in CorelDRAW 5. The random error "Error writing YOURFILE.ABK" occurs while working with a document. This message is often generated due to low system resources when creating an automated backup file, however, it can also appear due to overloaded or corrupt styles. By default, CorelDRAW will create a backup file every 10 minutes. The frequency of the backup, and the directory to which the file is stored can be changed by clicking Special, Preferences, Advanced. For more details on using backup files, click Help, Search for Help On, and type "backup features". An error occurs when saving a document, and/or the file gives an "Error reading" message when it is opened. If the file, or any part of the file, originated in CorelDRAW 6, these may be a known issue with an early revision of CorelDRAW 6. To check your revision, open CorelDRAW 6 and click Help, About CorelDRAW. If your version number is 6.00.112 or 6.00.118, contact Customer Service for information about obtaining the update. A temporary workaround is available, by performing the following steps: Note: Before saving as version 5, take the following precautionary steps in CorelDRAW 6: 1. Open the Styles Manager and delete all six bullet styles. 2. Click Tools, Options, Advanced, and disable the Enable Multitasking check box. 3. In the Save As dialog box, disable the Save Presentation Exchange Data check box. After performing these steps, you should not experience problems bringing your file into CorelDRAW 5. Errors occur while creating a backup or saving a file If this is experienced, export the file to the CMX (Corel Presentation Exchange) format. To do this, click File, Export, and change the List Files of Type list box to Corel Presentation Exchange. Export the file as normal. Note: The CMX file format supports all objects that are supported in a normal CorelDRAW CDR file, with the exception that page layout (i.e. number of pages, page size, paper orientation, etc.) and styles information are dropped from the resulting file. Therefore, each page of a document must be exported as a separate file. This is not a concern if the document consists of only a single page. If exporting is not successful, the error is system resource related. Increase available hard drive space by deleting temporary files, or by saving to a different drive. Refer to Fax on Demand documents #2010 and #1001 for tips on optimizing your computer. If the file can be exported successfully: 1. 3. Open CorelDRAW, and click File, Import. Import the CMX file. 4. Change the page layout, if required, by clicking Layout, Page Setup, and save the file. If the error occurs when attempting to open a file, refer to Fax on Demand document #5020. Tips for avoiding Styles-related issues If you use styles in a document, always save your custom styles template to a different filename than CORELDRW.CDT. If you do not use styles, always answer No to any message asking to update CORELDRW.CDT. As long as CORELDRW.CDT remains unaltered, style related errors will never be an issue. In order to avoid changes to CORELDRW.CDT, you may wish to designate that file as Read Only. Start by deleting the existing CORELDRW.CDT, and closing CorelDRAW to regenerate the file. Open File Manager or Windows Explorer, and click the CORELDRW.CDT file from the \COREL50\DRAW\TEMPLATE directory. Click File, Properties, and enable the Read Only check box. Click OK. This will prevent any changes to the default template file. However, this also means that any changes to default line widths, fills, font styles, and the like will not be updated from session to session. If these defaults are altered during a session, you may also be presented with a non-critical error when closing CorelDRAW. If these minor inconveniences are a lesser priority to you than styles-related issues, assigning CORELDRW.CDT a read-only attribute may be a viable alternative. Keep in mind that styles information is saved with every file. Renaming CORELDRW.CDT will avoid any styles problems in new documents, but it does nothing for files that already have styles information saved as part of the file. Following the above steps will reset one file, but they must also be followed for any other older files which have been affected by an overloaded or corrupt styles template. It is a good idea to periodically check the Styles RollUp, or leave the RollUp open during subsequent CorelDRAW sessions, to ensure that only the expected styles appear in the RollUp.
