====[ Bulletin 1 -- New Files ]=================================== Computer Connections PCBoard, Washington, D.C., 2400/1200 (202) 547-2008 -- Public; (202) 547-7621 -- Limited Access Brief descriptions and reviews of new files added to the system during July, 1987. ====================== Copyright (c) 1987, Robert S. Blacher. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Permission is hereby granted to reproduce and disseminate so long as: (1) No remuneration of any kind is received in exchange; and (2) Distribution is without any modification to the contents hereof, including this copyright notice. Any other use is prohibited without express, written permission in advance. ====================== NOTE: THIS IS A SPECIAL, SUMMER EDITION! How's that as a way of trying to cover-up and excuse the fact that this edition of the reviews is being released a month late and is much less complete than usual. My apologies to the authors of the programs discussed here. Many programs didn't get as full and timely treatment as the work deserved. Other commitments, and the fact that vacation time took the system off-line for a week during the month of July so it wouldn't get fried by lightning while I was away, make this edition of the reviews not at all among my best. If I were reviewing it, I'd say it's so-so at best, and the author ought to try to do better next time! (P.S. The August '87 reviews are being released today, too, and they're more up to par.). ====================== SPACE3.ARC 29134 07-31-87 Find free space on multiple hard disks/SASSCO U/L by Melvin Douglas. I like this -- it automatically searches all available hard disks and tells you the free space remaining on each. For those with only 1 hard disk, there are smaller, faster utilities that will provide the same information more efficiently. SUBS.ARC 6437 07-31-87 3 "handy" ASM subroutines/Aaron Brenner U/L by Melvin Douglas. OBSTA.ARC 11767 07-31-87 Observe and record experimental events (BAS) U/L by Melvin Douglas. PROGRA.ARC 37923 07-31-87 Prograde 1.2 spreadsheet-like teachr's gradebk U/L by Melvin Douglas. An aid for teachers who wish to record all that nasty info about how Johnny can't spell, this one has a spreadsheet-type interface, rather than the database orientation more common in packages of this kind. 386BUG.ARC 8498 07-31-87 Check 386 chip for MULTIPLY bug/ w ASM & C U/L by Thom Carlin. Intel's 386 chips have been plagued by a nasty little bug -- supposedly now fixed. Before buying a 386 machine, you might want to run this little program and see if it has a "new" chip. WD-27X.ARC 4957 07-31-87 DOC on WD-27X Controller and ST-238 drive U/L by Steve Shelton. Lots of good info in here. BASAID52.ARC 116975 07-31-87 BASICAID v5.20;expand/xref/etc BAS/Crippled U/L by Bob Weinstein. Crippleware is not reviewed; this program will not be on the system for long. DELBAK.ARC 14919 07-31-87 DEL *.BAK across subdirs v1.00 w/Turbo C U/L by Bob Weinstein. Lots of other programs do this as well, and some are more generic in repeating commands across subdirs. Kept for the Turbo C source. PHILKATZ.ARC 4786 07-31-87 Katz answers PK(X)ARC questions w/2 patches U/L by Bob Weinstein. Sheesh -- was this really necessary? Anyway, the patch info may be useful. MCOPY.ARC 58139 07-31-87 Multi-functn copier/seq or random files v1.3 U/L by Bob Weinstein. FBR158.ARC 13277 07-31-87 Buerg's File Backup /Restore v1.58 7/30/87 U/L & written by Vern Buerg. Vern's back (so to speak) working on FBR again, so give a look and watch out for new versions. DELDUP22.ARC 15816 07-31-87 Delete dupe files in 2 subdirs v2.2 ASM Buerg U/L & written by Vern Buerg. Now has a /N(ame) option that will delete duplicates based on same name alone, in addition to all the other useful criteria available in this program. PTOC.ARC 217881 07-31-87 PASCAL to C trnslatr/UNIX PAS & C/ Portable? U/L by Ken Brown. This code was written for UNIX. Ken indicates in a short message included in the arc that he has played with it a bit for a DOS port and not found the task trivial. If it's not trivial for Ken, it's WAAAAY past me, so .... C gurus? CR.ARC 1150 07-31-87 Sends carriage return to nxt pgm in .BAT file U/L by Jack Kilday. If you don't have STACKEY or equivalent already loaded, this may be handy as it's not a TSR. DEVICE.ARC 1903 07-31-87 List res device drivers/show type/etc. v1.0 U/L by Kurt Schelin. The information provided is quite useful but techie! PERMUTE.ARC 13725 07-31-87 Display/count all permutations of a string/PAS U/L by Jack Kilday. OSIMENU1.ARC 99168 07-30-87 \ System Organizer: DOS/BATCH menu system EXE OSIMENU2.ARC 9176 07-30-87 / DOC, BAT and sample config files v1.0 7/87 U/L by Loren Olson. Sorry -- I just don't use DOS menu systems and can't try all of these. There are just too many of them showing up lately. TCSTART1.ARC 2957 07-30-87 STACKEY/BAT preload Turbo C & .PRJ files U/L by Dick Stone. CBIN3.ARC 18239 07-30-87 BINs for dbIII+ in C/ A. Schulman v3 7/28 U/L by Tom Drinkard. DEARCSQ.ARC 31126 07-29-87 DEARC with "Squash" support in Turbo Pascal U/L & written by Richard Byrne (based on DEARC512.PAS by another author). This is the Turbo Pascal source (and COM) for the DEARC routines that are used in the Zdoor program here. Richard has added support for "squashed" files (the Phil Katz variation on "crunching" ). Katz has not released either code or much documentation on the algorithm, so this freely available Turbo Pascal source will prove invaluable to those seeking to understand/code squashing. Thanks, Richard. CCUR22.ARC 28567 07-29-87 Lundin's Counting Cursor (ruler) v2.2 7/26/87 An excellent program, the changes are in the area of how residency is accomplished, and some other enhancements. WPMOUSE6.ARC 9031 07-29-87 WordPerfect 4.2 / MS Mouse 6.0 mouse menu U/L by Neal Machtiger. EMILY.ARC 118979 07-29-87 Mailing list data base system v1.0 2/87 U/L by Charles Kleis. This package looks quite professional from a brief glance at it. Well-executed. LJ2UPSRC.ARC 9750 07-29-87 MS-C 4 source for HP laser util/2 pages/sheet U/L by Craig Hulvey. CI110.ARC 1192 07-28-87 CPU clock speed/wait states/perf index 1.1 U/L by Raymond Wood. The wait state info is unique to this program. In all other respects, it's similar to the many CPU speed checkers on this and other BBS systems. DURASCRN.ARC 49196 07-28-87 DuraScreen/programmers' screen drawing util U/L by Raymond Wood. Not terribly sophisticated, but useful perhaps for some tasks. LASTDIR2.ARC 1302 07-28-87 Save name of current drive/dir in env't 2.0 U/L by Raymond Wood. A push/pop type approach using environmental strings. See Arny's Krueger's package for this and more -- and it include source. NJRAMD15.ARC 26976 07-28-87 Nifty James' "Famous" Ram Disk/EMS/v1.15 U/L by Raymond Wood. I just have not had a lot of luck with this one, using an EMS disk on this AT (8 MhZ) with a Rampage-AT and REMM.SYS 3.2. It also gives you no control over file cluster allocations and its defaults are wrong for my application. TMPSPAC1.ARC 13056 07-28-87 Search for/get rid of/temporary files v1.1 U/L by Raymond Wood. EM39SRC.ARC 248467 07-28-87 MicroEmacs v3.9 C source code July '87 U/L by Mike Rubenstein. The complete source for Daniel Lawrence's excellent Emacs editor for PCs. VA202.ARC 51868 07-28-87 Door, ARC viewer and more for GT's host mode U/L by Raymond Wood. GTLOG74.ARC 89630 07-28-87 GT log file analyzer/reporter v7.4 J.Davis U/L by Raymond Wood. PCPDIALC.ARC 62149 07-28-87 PCPursuit/Telix 2.12 Dialer (hard-disk version PCPDIALB.ARC 64814 07-28-87 PCPursuit/Telix 2.12 Dialer (floppy version) U/L by Jim Moran. FILES-20.ARC 40602 07-28-87 Open 256 files/process/TSR/v2.0 works in .BAT 07-28-87 by Steve Gibson (InfoWorld)/w ASM source U/L by David Matheny. A TSR that may allow you to overcome the DOS limitation of FILES=20 and permit your applications to keep more files open at one time when necessary. v2 works in BATch files, which the first release did not. This is a freebie -- at the cost of a bit of hype in the package -- by Steve Gibson, InfoWorld columnist and author of a commercial screen speeder-upper. HISTRYRN.ARC 21889 07-28-87 Command history recall/v1.3R ported Turbo C Mike Rubenstein's excellent command recall program, ported to Turbo C by another author, with a few additional changes along the way. There's an excellent routine in this archive for reducing the default DATA segment used by Turbo C's small (and smaller) memory models to less than 64K. See C0.DOC in the archive, which may be worth having even if you otherwise are not interested in the program. DM24.ARC 84312 07-28-87 Directory Master v2.4 exclnt sweep util 071187 No update notes. NANSI22B.ARC 53027 07-28-87 New ANSI sys driver/fast/v2.2B w/ASM source The changes are quite minor, having largely to do with EGA support. A completely screwed up version of this archive has been floating around, with the compiled SYS files not corresponding to their names. This copy is correct. QMXFER.ARC 32038 07-28-87 Friel's X/Y/G/I/modem xfer module 1.2/BBS use Not very useful except for BBS' that don't support Ymodem or Ymodem-G and want to shell out to this module. Takes a ton of memory (over 100K), doesn't support SHARE, and the Ymodem is really Xmodem-1K. Why wouldn't folks shell to DSZ instead? INTRFA.ARC 82239 07-28-87 Test Hayes-compatible modem/serial port v1 U/L by Paul Gorski. HELP32.ARC 55223 07-28-87 On-line quick reference DOS 3.2 commands U/L by Steve Darnell. Not bad, and as hardly anyone is "upgrading" to DOS 3.3, this one certainly won't be obsolete for a while. RCOMM.ARC 48906 07-27-87 TSR Comm prgm v1.0/Xmodem/Ymodem (batch) <30K I had no luck at all with this one -- on my XT clone, it just wouldn't reliably talk to my comm port (COM1). Maybe some other TSR was getting in the way and I wasn't interested enough in the package to find out. Your move! GRAB19.ARC 51856 07-27-87 Grab address fr screen/prnt envelope/TSR 1.9 An excellent program for grabbing an address from a letter and printing an envelope. Best with a ProPrinter or an HP LJ. USAMAP.ARC 71956 07-27-87 USA map gives distances between cities/CGA U/L by Mike Rubenstein. Ah well, this is not the kind of program that interests me, but you folks gobble these up, so .... FINDS101.ARC 16452 07-27-87 Finds selected strings in file with C source U/L by Steve Hite. Greppy. WETSTONE.ARC 44187 07-27-87 Whetstone benchmarks in MS-C 4 & Turbo Pascal U/L by Andree Filipov. D1.ARC 1988 07-27-87 Small/Fast/Colorful/More info DIR /D. Terry U/L & written by David Terry. Just a tiny little COM file with no DOC but none needed as the program has no options. Type D and you get a fast, pretty DIR display with more info than DOS'. MSCMATH.ARC 55761 07-27-87 MS-C math routines for Personal REXX/B.Mayne U/L & written by Bill Mayne. Untested -- software unavailable. AJ-UTIL.ARC 28231 07-27-87 Miscellaneous utils/some AT-specific/A. Jones Really a grab bag, some work only with an AT or compatible. None seemed particularly unique. DNAV12.ARC 65411 07-27-87 Directory Navigator 1.2/Sweep & SUBMIT util Really a very powerful utility, with a bit of a learning curve, it's not so special as a sweep/chdir util, but the ability to batch up some commands (what we CP/M'rs called SUBMIT) is unique to this program. GTCTL44.ARC 91908 07-26-87 GT PowerComm host mode utility v4.4 U/L by Gerhard Barth. MSC4ASM.ARC 1634 07-26-87 Example of in-line ASM in MS-C source U/L by Rip Toren. CSOURC.ARC 53183 07-26-87 C source code control system from Bor SIG U/L by Mike Hickey. Unix's SCCS has nothing to fear, but this may prove a useful product as an addition to Turbo C. C_ANALYZ.ARC 30287 07-26-87 'C' analyzer - calls/decls/counts/ *.c v2.0 U/L by Rip Toren. QPURSUIT.ARC 7319 07-26-87 Linked scripts for PC Pursuit/Qmodem 3.0 U/L by Rip Toren. PKARCIT.ARC 705 07-26-87 Update old .arc files with PKARC35 by .BAT U/L & created by Jim Wright. A very clever batch file for re-arcing files, I would tend to use LARC (Vern Buerg's program) for this task when doing a lot of files as it takes wildcards. However, I have made some changes to this BATch file and use it occasionally for quick and dirty re-arcing. I'd suggest using Hanlin's ZDEL with the /K parameter for the wildcard delete rather than DEL *.* < Y as this batch uses. WPSEARCH.ARC 15122 07-25-87 Search/replace any code/any file incl WPrf U/L by Thomas Hamill. It understands Word Perfect! That and the fact that you can replace anything -- including printer codes -- may make this quite useful to some of you. PDSQUOTE.ARC 206999 07-25-87 Prepare price quotes for projects v3.12 U/L by Don Doyle. Untested -- too specialized for me! EM39DOC.ARC 168960 07-25-87 MicroEmacs editor v3.9 documentation/config U/L by Mike Focke. More of the ME 3.9 set. MSPELLD1.ARC 106525 07-25-87 Spell check for microEMACS v3.9 -- DOCs MSPELLE1.ARC 35068 07-25-87 Spell check for microEMACS v3.9 -- EXE MSPELLS1.ARC 29976 07-25-87 Spell check for microEMACS v3.9 -- Source U/L by Mike Focke. I give up -- I've renamed these. They were originally sent as SPELLEXE, SPELLDOC & SPELLSRC.ARCs, but they've been re-uploaded several times now under the MSPELL names, so .... EM39IBM.ARC 65281 07-25-87 MicroEmacs 3.9: IBM-PC Mono,CGA,EGA EXE The 3.9 executable for the IBM-PC. All monitors now supported in one EXE file. EPSLQ8FA.ARC 68112 07-25-87 AutoCAD printer driver for EPSON LQ-series U/L by James Austin. Untested -- hardware AND software unavailable. ANS10.ARC 3184 07-25-87 Ask questions/input answers in BAT/w A86 Nothing special except that it includes the source in Isaacson's A86 assembler. IOCTL.ARC 13267 07-25-87 Ioctl() function for Lattice C w/test prgm U/L & written by Larry Himes. XLIB.ARC 20593 07-25-87 Comm & multitasking library for DataLight C U/L by John Howard. PCW-DCA.ARC 164939 07-25-87 PC Write to/from DCA format w/exclnt doc Even if you don't use PC-Write, the documentation here of the DCA format is the best I've seen. If you do use PC-Write and care about conversion into what IBM is pushing as the "standard", then this archive will be doubly useful. FDRAW1.ARC 51042 07-25-87 \ FLODRAW flow chart creation & editing FDRAW2.ARC 63836 07-25-87 / WYSIWYG editr w/symbol library/B&W charts Except for the no-color limitation (which isn't this program's fault -- short of an EGA, not much can be done about that), this is a very easy to use and quite powerful program for creating and customizing flow charts. I hope everyone knows WYSIWYG means "What you see is what you get"! PRONTO.ARC 63104 07-25-87 Menu-driven bar/line/pie charter w/legends v1 U/L by J. Levine. Not the most sophisticated chart program on the system, this one will be up and running on your system in a few minutes -- the learning curve (ooops! pun!) is very short. CBIN-DB.ARC 20362 07-25-87 BINs for dbIII+ written in C/ A. Schulman CUTPAST3.ARC 15073 07-25-87 TSR cut & paste utility takes 6K RAM w/ASM Everybody has their favorite cut and paste utility, and this one is often high on folks' list. SURVEY.ARC 103038 07-25-87 Coordinate Geometry for Surveyors v3.0 U/L by Ron Wright. Boy -- is this out of my league! SCRIPT10.ARC 21657 07-25-87 Script font for HP LaserJet/G. Elfring U/L by J. Levine. You also need DOWNLOAD.ARC by the same author to get the fonts to your HPLJ (lucky you). Untested -- hardware unavailable. PURCHASE.ARC 93626 07-25-87 Purchase order tracking system v2.0 U/L by J. Levine. Specialized application -- untested. PLUG1.ARC 33049 07-24-87 Free-space defragmenter w/Lattice C v1.1 U/L & written by Larry Himes. Some small bug fixes. Archive contains the complete set of files. PUSHEXT.ARC 27958 07-24-87 PUSH routine from CLM with ASM source U/L by Steve Hite. QED-PAS.ARC 8518 07-24-87 Simple editor in TPascal/use as a start U/L by Steve Hite. VERY simple. VIDBIOS.ARC 34409 07-24-87 Video BIOS routines in Turbo C U/L by Steve Hite. TEE.ARC 2225 07-24-87 Split output to file & CON/like Unix/ASM U/L by Jim Gitzen. Seems to work quite well and it's small and fast. Source included. PCCLOCK.ARC 3484 07-24-87 Clock with CAPS, Num & Scrl Lk indicator U/L by Jim Gitzen. These make me shudder as they all steal interrupts from communications programs and demolish file transfers. DISK110.ARC 51707 07-24-87 Stump's Disk Commando 1.10 de-frag/modify/more U/L by David Parker. A subset of DSKCMD (Desk Commando) by the same authors, this has only the de-frag, unerase, disk/sector editor features. Very limited doc file. WINDOW33.ARC 21763 07-24-87 Multi-level windows in Turbo Pascal v3.3 U/L by Nevin Dubin. Excellent, fast TPas window routines, used by quite a few other packages on this system. Almost a must-have for TPas programmers. See also QWIK21.ARC. MINIX12.ARC 116570 07-24-87 Official upgrades: Minix 1.1 to 1.2/TAR files U/L by Ken Brown. *Official* bug fixes for Tannenbaum's Unixy MINIX operating system, these are in TAR format. DRVTABL.ARC 13641 07-24-87 Display 47 drive table entries in BIOS/TPas U/L & written by Ron Shillington. POE.ARC 47898 07-24-87 Run other programs (transfer modules)/ProComm U/L by Neal Machtiger. To be honest, I think this is very clumsy to use, but here for those who can tolerate its menu structure. PEDITOR.ARC 107571 07-24-87 MicroTech's PC Editor 1.0/WS-like/multi-file U/L by Fred Bauer. REMOVED until/unless some copyright issues can be resolved. Suffice it to say, this looks *too* much like Sammy Mitchell's QEDIT and Sammy does license the source code. At the very least, there's no reason to have a QEDIT-clone on this system when we have the real thing. PAGEONE.ARC 140179 07-24-87 Simple desktop publishing/formatting v4.02pc U/L by Fred Bauer. These post-processors are really very hard to use and involve a lot of labor. Much too much labor for lazy old me. DSZ0722.ARC 48274 07-23-87 Forsberg's X/Y/Zmodem transfer module 7/22/87 07-23-87 Compiled w/Turbo C tiny model; uses < 66K mem It wouldn't be a real day if there weren't a new version of DSZ ! The change today is not trivial. Chuck has recompiled with a different memory model and the program now takes less than 66K of RAM in which to run. Note: It's now a COM rather than an EXE file, so be sure to delete your older copy. Also, note that the maximum size of the buffer (pBxxxx) is now 8192 bytes (and it still doesn't seem to work on receives anyway, though is fine on sends). RYBBS30.ARC 155031 07-23-87 RYBBS V3.0 bbs program by Gregory Ryan U/L by Melvin Douglas. LASM.ARC 37349 07-23-87 Convert Tiny Pascal to Assembly language U/L by Michael Pechnyo. GRABBER.ARC 25633 07-23-87 TSR screen capture to COM file/CGA/ v2.10 U/L by Geoffrey Bogeaus. Very clever and seems to work quite well. CGA or equivalent required. SOS102.ARC 7305 07-23-87 TSR capture/restore images to/fr memory/disk U/L by Geoffrey Bogeaus. Another quite good program in this genre of capturing the screen to a disk file (and, unique to this program, vice-versa). DOFILTER.ARC 27713 07-23-87 Multi-purpose filter/reformatter/menu-driven U/L by Geoffrey Bogeaus. The menus aren't my cup of tea, but this is a powerful filter program. DOWN.ARC 2415 07-23-87 Move up/down through directories/sub-dir's U/L by Geoffrey Bogeaus. LJFONT10.ARC 9568 07-23-87 HP LaserJet soft font emulates screen chars U/L by Don Udel. DICE370.ARC 19788 07-23-87 DOS Interactive Command Editor v3.70/E.S.Adams U/L by Scott Pazur. Really a very good program, but I'm thoroughly hooked on Chris Dunford's PCED (commercial version of (C)ommand (ED)itor) and just can't be persuaded to spend much time with any other in this category. QBFE11.ARC 64382 07-23-87 QBasic Front End1.1/Use own editor/invke LINK U/L by Scott Pazur. Bug fixes to a good program for those who can do without QBasic's built-in editor. MEMUSE.ARC 4539 07-23-87 Show mem seg used by drivers and TSRs w/ASM Techie, techie, techie, but some useful info. VANFEES.ARC 16378 07-23-87 Full text of FCC access fee NPRM 7/17/87 U/L by Geoffrey Bogeaus. Instead of all the speculation about what the FCC's proposal to impose access fees on enhanced service providers like Telenet, Tymnet, etc., maybe circulation of the actual text of the proposal will make the discussion a bit more accurate. This contains the full text of the FCC's notice of proposed rulemaking in this matter. IFP_SRC.ARC 157424 07-23-87 Illinois Func Prog Lang (USENET)/Unix C U/L by Marc Adler. Sorry folks -- WAAAAAAAAAAY over my head, and nothing in the docs I could steal for a brief description. ENVED2.ARC 9692 07-23-87 Edit environment w/your own editor/C/PAS/BAS U/L & written by Bill Mayne. Clever -- but I edit environment strings with PCED synonyms. If you don't .... Source is interesting and useful. DSZ0720.ARC 48246 07-22-87 Forsberg's X/Y/Zmodem transfer module 7/20/87 Corrects a bug in the Zmodem protocol that could cause a CRC error near the end of a file to abort the transfer. EMC110.ARC 10286 07-22-87 Expanded memory disk cache v1.10 XT/AT An update to EMMCACHE, I use a commercial disk cache program with more features than this one and with which I'm happy, so .... TDRAW221.ARC 108623 07-21-87 THEDRAW Color Screen Image Text Editor v2.21 U/L by Loren Olson. One of the best of the ansi draw programs on this system, nice to see an update to show that the program is alive and well, even if the changes didn't look earth shattering. FILES256.ARC 39938 07-21-87 Allow most pgms to use up to 256 files w/ASM U/L by Mike Rubenstein. This is the "FILES" program by Steve Gibson that he discussed in his recent InfoWorld column. FLEX17.ARC 37863 07-21-87 FlexiFile-Quick Database v1.3 free-form U/L by Loren Olson. Quick and dirty. Not designed to compete with a full-fledged DBMS. An excellent little program for jotting down notes and even organizing them a bit. DIRF10.ARC 8291 07-21-87 Lists files w/string anywhere in name/Turbo C U/L by Mike Focke. This is a very useful little program for finding files matching a string pattern in a DIR, and the TC source is even included as a bonus. PIBASY44.ARC 53644 07-21-87 Turbo Pascal async i/o routines, v4.4 P.Burns U/L & written by Philip Burns. Some minor fixes to the best set of TPas comm routines on this system. No update notes at all. A very good package reviewed here extensively before, but the release of new versions without any info as to what's new is a habit I would urge this author to break. STATW.ARC 5425 07-21-87 Christensen's free space/cluster info w/ASM Gee, CP/M'rs -- remember STAT. Well, this is sort of the same idea for DOS, by Ward Christensen with ASM source included. FF100.ARC 5763 07-21-87 FileFind/optional delete/batch create K.Graham Nicely done, I use SUB by Jean Lalonde for this task as it's easier in my particular configuration for ad hoc finds/deletes across multiple drives, but Keith Graham writes excellent programs and you should have a look at this one. FAT104.ARC 16785 07-20-87 Chris Dunford's FAT list utility v1.04 U/L by Melvin Douglas. Some minor updates to an excellent program that gives you invaluable info about your file allocation table, cluster usage, etc. TRANS.ARC 10921 07-20-87 Character translation filter v1.01/BobHalsall U/L by Bob Weinstein. DSZ0717.ARC 47444 07-20-87 Forsberg's X/Y/Zmodem xfer module 7/17/87 Implements a logging function (SET DSZLOG=LOGNAME) and has some new features specially for DesqView users. The receive buffer still doesn't seem to work (???). Testing here indicates that hardware handshaking during error-recovery has been improved, a significant problem with earlier versions when DSZ was used at 9600 bps and up. ================= 7/13-7/20 The system was off-line during this week while the Sysop took a little break. Unfortunately, the frequency of severe thunderstorms during this time of year made it unwise to leave the system up while unattended. ================= WRDMGR.ARC 133118 07-13-87 WordMgr full-featured word processor v1.4 7/87 U/L by Loren Olson. Pretty good. It's awfully tough for shareware word processors to make it. They have competition from other venerable shareware products -- e.g. PC-Write -- and the cost of a full-fledged commercial word processor like Word Perfect is less than $200 mail order. For people who write for a living, will they really spend much time with a package like this? PROMPTUT.ARC 3537 07-13-87 Single-screen Prompt Tutor to write prompts. U/L by Steve Hoglund. PASS-KEY.ARC 4138 07-13-87 Create tiny com files to stop/go in batfiles U/L by Steve Hoglund. This package has generated some very favorable feedback on this BBS. Take a look for yourself. SAIL120.ARC 118832 07-12-87 Powerful, multi-file, windows text editor 1.20 07-12-87 w/macros, uEmacs emulation, help / ltd doc Courtesy CPCUG Software Library. Quite good though the lack of full documentation until you register will make it a bit difficult to explore all that this program can do. STRING.ARC 9233 07-12-87 Prnt ASCII strings in .EXE/.COM files w/C U/L by Jack Kilday. Another one. SCAN is my favorite in this category. FSTWATCH.ARC 20036 07-12-87 1-MS resolution timer TSR with test progs U/L & written by Larry Himes. DFF.ARC 12265 07-12-87 File Finder/whereis/multiple drives/Dan Doman U/L by Dennis Latkowski. I'm not at all sure this is really by Dan Doman as there's no name to be found anywhere in the arc. But, it's an OK whereis program. CLEAR2.ARC 22400 07-12-87 Check text against list of unclear/vague words U/L by Dennis Latkowski. This bulletin would flunk. The program is pretty primitive. LOOKUP.ARC 27820 07-11-87 Generic lookup util w/DOS 3.x ref as example U/L by Donald Diamond. An excellent, non-TSR lookup engine, the included sample database is a good on-line DOS help facility, but you can use this easily for most anything. The format of the data files is simple and intuitive. DBU161.ARC 80469 07-11-87 dB3UTIL v1.61-dBASE III+/QUICKSILVER utility U/L & written by Cal Thames. Untested -- software unavailable. FU221.ARC 76545 07-11-87 FileUtil v2.21-expand DIR;mod time, date, attr U/L & written by Cal Thames. Some fixes to a very good dir manipulation util. PLUG.ARC 32723 07-11-87 Free-space defragmenter w/Lattice C source U/L & written by Larry Himes. Golden Bow's VOPT is an absolutely indispensable tool to me and uses a somewhat more complicated algorithm than this program with better results for my applications. But, Larry has made this optimizer freely available AND included the source. Take a look! JAPAN12.ARC 174895 07-11-87 Tutorial on Japanese vocab, grammar, culture 1.2 U/L by Brian Miller. Sort of an electronic Berlitz -- quick immersion in the world of Japan for those who may be doing business there. This won't make you an expert but is an interesting program to fool with and a little bit of a help. MORSE.ARC 13880 07-11-87 Practice/improve speed on Morse code U/L by Jack Ference. Dit-dah-dit-dah-dit-dit-dit. (What the hell did I just say??). ULT-CKBK.ARC 45276 07-11-87 Ultimate Check Book Balancer/no doc/some help U/L by Vernon Huang. MLINK12.ARC 34800 07-07-87 Meiner's MegaLink xfer module 1.2 w/errlvl Now sets an errorlevel of 1 on aborts. I tried it briefly and had problems with how it handles the COM ports here. And, no SHARE support or CTS control. I'll stick with Zmodem. VA201.ARC 51275 07-07-87 Arc viewer (and more)/GT's Host/Door mode U/L by Raymond Wood. FASTCHK3.ARC 23836 07-07-87 CHKDSK replacement;faster, more info;COM only U/L by Raymond Wood. A nice program -- fast and pretty. ENVP23.ARC 30924 07-07-87 Print 3 sizes of envelopes v2.3/most prntrs U/L by David Geerinck. Not bad, but it won't store your return address -- you have to type it in every time you load the program. PS33.ARC 63025 07-07-87 Patriquin's PSEARCH 3.3:File/text search util U/L by Tom Drinkard. An update to Norm Patriquin's excellent file/text search utility. The changes are not major but it's worth getting the latest. PSEARCH does EVERYTHING. It's not always as fast as some special purpose search utils, but they're all combined into one here and there are some unique capabilities that aren't found anywhere else. Some learning curve involved before getting the most of this powerful program. WPROT.ARC 2871 07-07-87 Software write protect any disk;K.Graham U/L by Bob Weinstein. MASTRDOS.ARC 59069 07-05-87 DOS Shell/comm w/Xmodem & vt100 v1.09 U/L by Bob Chernow. Not great. PRES6X.ARC 143737 07-05-87 Present/create graphic slide show v6.XE 6/87 An update to an excellent program to prepare "slides" (screen displays), order, modify their display and present them. This version limits the number of slides in a single "tray" but this limitation doesn't seem particularly onerous. TELXSR.ARC 14374 07-05-87 Alphabetic sort of Telix fon dir v.2 U/L by Loren Olson. CUTFILE1.ARC 14174 07-05-87 Cut file into 360K chunks for floppy copy/TPas When all else fails, this may be one way to get a monster file onto floppies if you don't want to use BACKUP for some reason. FGREP151.ARC 7758 07-04-87 C.Dunford's text search util v1.51/even faster U/L & written by Chris Dunford. Chris gave me an advance peek at this one and I can tell you that it is fast as all get out. Chris' FGREP now can't be beat in my testing by any other FGREP/FIND type program on this system in terms of both speed, ease of use, common-sense syntax, etc. In short, this is the pattern match utility I use 99% of the time in DOS when I want to search one or more ascii files for a string. Just an excellent program that all of you should try. You'll end up erasing DOS' FIND from your disk. MTECH224.ARC 2463 07-04-87 How-to setup MultiTech 224E for reliable xfers U/L & written by Dave Klein. Clearly describes how to configure this modem for MNP transfers using full-flow protocols like Ymodem-G or Imodem. LOOK12.ARC 17138 07-04-87 Examine/change data on 1.2 meg AT floppy U/L by Mike Focke. A disk sector modifier geared for the AT's floppy drive. SRCH81.ARC 39263 07-04-87 Search/replace in ASCII files v8.1, Art Hill U/L by Bob Weinstein. A very good search util with replace capabilities. Not sure what's new in this revision (and new versions do seem to pop up frequently). WAKA100.ARC 6290 07-04-87 Kill program on CD drop for Doors;070487, KPG U/L by Bob Weinstein. For doors that don't monitor carrier themselves (all the ones here do), a better alternative than WATCHDOG. This one kills the program if CD drops and returns control to the batch file. GRAB18.ARC 58902 07-04-87 Grab address from letter and print it/TSR/1.8 Update to a very good program to "grab" an address off your screen and print an envelope with it. FRAGS.ARC 19665 07-04-87 Identify fragmented files w/TPas source U/L by Brian Miller. JUSTIFY.ARC 30815 07-04-87 Right justify ASCII text file/ pretty fast U/L by Lewis Dozier. The right margin of the document to be justified must be less than the number you give this program to work with (or was it more -- now I've forgotten). Anyway, while quite fast, that limits the usefulness of this program. ANSMUSIC.ARC 30010 07-04-87 Create Ansi music file for BBS exe/bas 6/87 U/L by Brian Miller. A very good package of Turbo C routines, this is the version with complete documentation. A shorter set of arcs is also making the rounds. PM9.ARC 118657 07-02-87 Pilot master 1.09; Makes FAA flight plans U/L by Hewie Poplock. Untested -- specialized application. PCFDOC.ARC 178032 07-02-87 User's Guide for PC-File+ v1.0 Buttonware U/L by Rich Schinnell. 3 cheers for Jim Button. When PC-File Plus was first released, there was no documentation at all, and it came in for some heavy weather in this bulletin, comments by callers, etc. But, here's the very adequate documentation for this powerful, shareware filer so you can finally figure out what PC-File can now do! BAKERS12.ARC 252315 07-02-87 Baker's Dozen/Screen/disk/file utils/1-page 07-02-87 spreadsheet/Buttonware/skimpy docs 6/1/87 The lack of documentation isn't really very troubling as the programs are easy enough to use. But, I can't say I've found any in here that I'm going to end up using. A few other people whose opinions I respect say they are impressed by the power of the file/disk/sector editor that's included in the package. ZANSI12.ARC 28946 07-02-87 Fast ANSI dev driver 1.2/Hanlin's NANSI mods U/L & written by Tom Hanlin. Some minor changes, but uses 97 less bytes of memory (and on this machine, where I do use ZANSI, every little byte counts!). PSLABEL.ARC 32121 07-02-87 Mail labels/PrintShop/Master graphics w/TP U/L by Mark Elengold. VOL6N14.ARC 48256 07-02-87 DR (sweep)/TSR managers (poor) PCMag ASM/BAS U/L by Art Altenburg. The little sweep util is pretty good. The TSR managers are awful compared to Kokkonen's MARK/RELEASE. PCOPY62.ARC 63981 07-01-87 Patriquin's excellent COPY/MOVE utility v6.2 U/L by Tom Drinkard. Talk about a quick response, it looks like Norm fixed the little bug noted below in copying larger files in "no windows" mode within less than 24 hours. That's all that's new in 6.2. See review of PCOPY60.ARC for more info on this excellent program. FFSOURCE.ARC 24323 07-01-87 File Find (whereis) w/select criteria/MS-C 4 U/L & written by Bill Mayne. Inspired by Norton's FileFind, this one has some unique options I've not seen in other "whereis" type utils, including limiting the search to files of certain sizes, date/time range, and attributes. The display format can also be modified with command line options. All in all, looks very powerful and comes with complete MS-C 4 source. SORTF220.ARC 4546 07-01-87 Buerg's excellent SORT replacement v2.20 07-01-87 Now sorts on up to 16 key fields/very fast In the docs for SORTF, Vern Buerg modestly states that the advantages of SORTF vs. DOS's SORT filter is that the former can handle files larger than 63K and takes "less time." Let me be a bit more blunt: The DOS SORT program is next to useless. It's a bicycle with training wheels compared to Vern's Indy racing machine. SORTF can, if memory allows, sort a file as large as 40,000 records (up to a 16 meg file) and it does so FAST! Version 2.20 adds a much needed capability to this program -- the ability to sort on multiple key fields. Up to 16 fields of variable lengths can be specified. And the syntax is a cinch. All this in a program that's 2,805 bytes (getting awful large there, Vern -- that's 57 more bytes than the last release!). O.K. You have the message. SORTF has always been an invaluable tool to me and the ability to sort on multiple keys is a very significant revision. Note: I participated in testing of this program (that may make me biased but also means I've had a chance to put the new features through their paces and see how vaulable and easy-to-use they are). For counting field positions and lengths for the sort, use Buerg's LIST with the ruler on or Counting Cursor (CCUR21B.ARC). WSTAR40.ARC 20243 07-01-87 Slashbar (PC Mag) menu for WordStar 4.0 U/L & written by Bob Berman. Looks like a very complete menu implementation for WS 4.0 using PC Mag's SLASHBAR program (available here separately). So, if you're into those menus -- or WS 4.0 for that matter -- give it a try. BASDLX15.ARC 30480 07-01-87 Library for compiled Basic v1.5/G.Verdun Nothing earth-shattering, but some nice changes since the last version here (1.3). Edited update notes (bug fixes left out): --- BASDLX Version 1.5, Released June 16, 1987 GETSTRD now supports the use of a mouse as a pointing device. "This quick-and-dirty utility will create a .COD file which contains a mixed assembly and Turbo-C source code listing. The result is similar to that obtained by using the "-Fc" option flag with Microsoft C v3.0 or v4.0." TC-LIB.ARC 5729 07-01-87 Librarian for Turbo C's TLINK and video fncs. U/L by Steve Hite. Contains the following: VIDASM.C In line assembler routines to clear the screen and position or hide the cursor. QLIB.C QLIB is a librarian for TLINK. It can create .LIB files from .OBJ files. Compile it with Turbo C. QLIB cannot modify existing libraries or be used with Microsoft LINK. FASTWR.C Fast screen write. Converted from FastWrite.pas to Turbo C inline assembly language. Tested only with Huge and Large memory models. TCLIB1.ARC 15552 07-01-87 Librarian for Turbo C (extract, delete, add) U/L by Steve Hite. "The TCLIB librarian is an object code library manager for use with Turbo C librarys used with TLINK. The libraries created and managed by this program are NOT Microsoft .LIB compatible but are compatible with those produced by QLIB, the quick and dirty library CREATE ONLY utility written by Roger Schlafy for Borland. It can however, read and convert Microsoft format library files, such as those supplied with Turbo C. The TCLIB libraries have the advantage of being much smaller (an average of 10K on a 70-80k Microsoft format lib). The TCLIB program is also much faster than LIB from Microsoft. It can extract, delete, and append files using an all command line approach or a command line and response file approach (for long lists of commands). It can also provide a list of object modules in a library." TC-HELP.ARC 44797 07-01-87 Database of Turbo C function calls (params) U/L by Steve Hite.
