               Welcome  aboard.   As  editor  of  PC  FIRING   LINE/PC
          UNDERGROUND (PCFL/PCUG), I hope you like our disk  magazine.
          PCFL/PCUG  is  a  bi-monthly  technical  magazine  aimed  at
          programmers of the IBM-PC - like yourself.

               PCFL is contained on Diskette A, and PCUG is  contained
          on  Diskette  B.  Collectively,  they  are  referred  to  as
          PCFL/PCUG.

               Each file displayed  in PCFL/PCUG has  a banner at  the
          bottom giving the file name.  For example,

               Use  this  information,  and  the  DOS Type command, to
          print the files you  want.  (An integral print  function may
          be  provided  in  future  issues.)   In  this  manner   your
          bookshelf is  not cluttered  with paper,  but contains  only
          desired articles.

          ³ Printer Madness                  ³

               Most  printers  cannot  properly  print  the characters
          shown on the IBM display.  The program PRETTY1.EXE, included
          on Diskette A,  causes extended-graphic characters  to print
          as a series of asterisks.  (See the Masthead section of  the
          Editor's Console for further details.)

               To  avoid  any  future  confusion,  let me mention some
          history.   PCFL/PCUG  began  its  life  as  a  disk magazine
          marketed on  the FREEWARE(tm)  principle.  Individuals  were
          encouraged  to  send  us  diskettes  for  free copies of our
          magazine.   We  found  this  approach  unworkable,  but have
          retained its best component.  Our current marketing approach
          is summarized below:


                   PCFL/PCUG  is  published  bi-monthly  at a
                   cost  of  $12  per  issue,  and  $72 for a
                   one-year (six-issue) subscription.  (These
                   are U.S. funds.  Foreign countries, please
                   send money orders  and add $5 air mail for
                   each issue.)

                   Copies  may  be  made  for non-profit use.
                   Make  copies  for  your friends, and those
                   receiving these copies are asked to  remit
                   $6 for the issue.


               To  distill  it  further   --  send  money,  and   make
          non-profit copies for your friends!

          ³ New Features                     ³
          ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

               This issue has many new features for your enjoyment:

          1.   As a plug, PCFL/PCUG and Personal Computer Age (PC Age)
          will   be   collaborating   on   a   programming    project.
          Interesting, ah?  More details later.

          2.   I had hinted  in past issues  that PCUG was  a separate
          entity, but it actually was treated as a menu item in  PCFL.
          Finally, PCUG has come of age with its own assembly-language
          driver  and  forms the  body of  Diskette B.  (Diskette A is
          reserved  for  PCFL.)   Nonetheless,  PCFL  and PCUG are not
          currently sold separately, but together as PCFL/PCUG.

          3.   For those using DOS 2.x,  DEMO programs in PCUG can  be
          executed from within PCUG.  (There  is no need to return  to
          the DOS level.)

               If you  would like  to write  an article  for us, don't
          hesitate to send me a query letter explaining the topic  and
          the approximate length  in EPSON MX-80  pages.  There is  no
          lower limit for an article's  length: a word to the  wise is
          sufficient, but we prefer articles with at least two words.

               In general, payment  for articles, tips,  and utilities
          is related to the quality of the work and the time  required
          for its creation.
