After you try it out, if you decide you don't like it or can't use it, erase it and you owe nothing. But, if use/keep it, then send me $25 ($125 if you use it to prepare tax returns for a fee). For the few honest registered users of FEDTAX86, the price is $10 ($50 for commercial preparers). You may give unmodified copies to anyone and post this on bulletin boards as long as this READ_ME.TXT file accompanies the copy. DESCRIPTION ----------- This template includes the following 1987 Federal tax forms: Form 1040, pages 1 & 2; Schedules A, B, C, D, & E; and Form 8598 (Computation of Deductible Home Mortgage Interest). User menus are provided to move from form to form (ALT-M), and to make use of print macros to selectively print the forms (ALT-P). Global protection is enabled and recalculation is automatic. You merely move from cell to cell, entering your figures in the unprotected cells; totals are summed and taxes are calculated instantaneously. A window at the bottom of the screen constantly displays your Adjusted Gross Income, Taxable Income, Total Tax, Total Payments, and the Refund Due You or the Amount Due to IRS. HIGHLIGHTS ---------- SCHEDULE D, CAPITAL GAINS AND LOSSES - After completing Parts I and II, the Alternative Tax Computation at Part IV is performed automatically. And, if this results in a lesser tax than that calculated from the Rate Schedule or Tax Table, the Alternative Tax amount is used on Form 1040, page 2. Capital Loss Carryovers, if any, from 1987 to 1988 are also calculated automatically. STANDARD DEDUCTION - If you do not itemize deductions on Schedule A, the appropriate Standard Deduction is selected based on your Filing Status, whether or not you or your spouse are over 65 years old and/or blind, and whether you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return. FORM 8598, DEDUCTIBLE HOME MORTGAGE INTEREST - This is a new form for 1987. Normally, if you DIDN'T take out a home mortgage for purposes other than to buy your home OR refinance OR borrow additional amounts after 8/16/86, you wouldn't use this form. But, for purposes of this template, YOU MUST COMPLETE PART I---the deductible interest on Schedule A comes from this form. Also note: if you do complete Part II, make sure Part III lines 15 and 16 are both $0. Likewise if you complete Part III, make sure Part II lines 7 and 8 are both $0. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ FINALLY, remember FEDTAX87 is NOT your CPA, accountant, or commercial tax return preparer ---- it is just a very fast and sometimes smart adding machine. It's your responsibility to know enough about the rules and regulations to put the right amounts on the right lines in the right forms. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
