Why not make PCOPY a complete PC backup system??? March 1988 Many users continue to ask why PCOPY is not enhanced to become a full fledged backup system. I want to address situation by referring to another product that I have developed that currently exists on the retail market. When I am not at home developing Shareware, I work for Sterling Software as a product manager for a development group working on IBM mainframe and micro software products. The Software Labs division of Sterling Software develops system software utilities to help IBM mainframe users manage DASD storage. Our major product is DMS/OS, a mainframe backup, archival, migration and general DASD management system. I worked as part of the DMS/OS development team for seven years. In 1983 Sterling Software decided to develop a counterpart to DMS/OS that would allow users to manage IBM PC disk storage. This product was to provide hard disk to floppy disk backup and hard disk to mainframe backup through a communications link. At that time I was given this project and subsequently developed Intelligent Backup. While designing Intelligent Backup, I incorporated the best parts of our mainframe backup system DMS/OS, developed some new backup techniques specially for the PC, and added an easy to use interface to totally automate the backup process. The result is the existing Intelligent Backup product you may purchase today. I highly recommend Intelligent Backup for any user considering purchasing a PC backup product. Being a software developer for many years, I know how important it is for users to have systems that let them grow into new hardware and software. Other systems that use direct interfaces to hardware to improve backup performance, sacrifice total compatibility with existing and future environments. IB was designed to be completely compatible with all PC hardware and software environments. For this reason we developed IB strictly using DOS interfaces and conventions. At first glance, IB appears slower than other backup systems, but if you take the time to examine its intelligence and sophisticated features, you will find it is actually very quick and efficient as well as being a very solid product. In addition, IB provides advanced features not found in other products. Our research has shown that a typical IB user uses less time backing up their hard disk than users with other "faster" systems. IB makes up for its slower speed by compressing data before backup and by intelligently managing the backup process. For example, I backup my 80 megabyte support BBS system on a regular basis using Intelligent Backup, and the average backup takes less than 5 minutes. With Intelligent Backup I have not needed a full backup in over 5 months. If I lose my hard disks today, I can completely restore the system to the status that existed at the last backup. I apologize of this sounds like an advertisement. I work for Sterling Software and receive no royalties or commission for this product. I am just very excited about Intelligent Backup because I believe it is the best PC backup system available today. Norm Patriquin ----------------------------------------------------- In addition to all the features typically available in PC backup systems, Intelligent Backup has the following features that make it a very complete and flexible system: Three levels of backup In addition to FULL and UPDATE levels of backup, IB provides CONSOLIDATE backup so full backups are seldom needed. CONSOLIDATE backup frees up backup disks like full backup but only takes about 1/5 the time of a full backup. Automatic prompt that reminds you to backup each day An optional feature allows you to be prompted to backup each day. You are shown the date of the last backup and are informed how many days have elapsed since that date. If you respond backup is to be taken, IB automatically begins the proper backup needed at that time. Backup to any media: floppy disks, disk cartridges, LAN hard disks, mainframe virtual disks Because IB uses standard DOS interfaces, it will backup to any device that is referenced by a disk drive letter such as C:, D:, E:, etc. Tracks files that you intentionally delete from your hard disk Have you ever tried a full restore and realized that your backup software restores your temporary and outdated files that you deleted from your hard disk long ago? IB knows about files you delete so you can decide to restore them or not. Data compression IB uses the data compression algorithms to efficiently conserve diskette usage. Indexing system that allows selective backup and restore IB keeps track of where your files are backed up so you don't have to. You tell IB what to restore and it tells you which disk(s) to mount. IB is totally flexible on restore.
