A report on 3.5-inch floppy disks by Memory Control Technology Corp.
found a wide disparity in the quality of the offerings from major
manufacturers and distributors. Like its earlier test of 5 1/4-inch
diskettes Memcon, a maker of diskette testing and duplicating equipment,
found no relationship between price and quality of the 3.5-inch
products. The latest effort included tests on 100 3.5-inch diskettes
from each of 25 leading manufacturers. The results show that the 100
diskettes from only four of the manufacturers passed both the ANSI
missing-bit and extra-bit tests. Memcon graded the manufacturers
according to 11 separate criteria.
