While I'm not even sure this should belong on the first page potential users see, without a doubt it shouldn't link directly to the form that users should fill in - the least they should do is search to see if the bug they are reporting has already been reported. The attached patch changes the link to point to the "Bug Reports" section of the website (which contains a link to the form anyway), and also moves it down a bit so that it's not the second link of that section on the front page. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: --- fbsdhomepage.diff begins here --- Index: www/en/index.xsl =================================================================== RCS file: /usr/cvs/www/en/index.xsl,v retrieving revision 1.146 diff -u -r1.146 index.xsl --- www/en/index.xsl 9 May 2006 07:30:29 -0000 1.146 +++ www/en/index.xsl 13 May 2006 22:43:02 -0000 @@ -163,9 +163,6 @@ Mailing Lists

This would make it more difficult to locate the form for submitting new bug reports :( From: Gavin Atkinson To: Giorgos Keramidas Cc: bug-followup@freebsd.org Subject: Re: www/97233: [patch] Change the "Report a Bug" link on the home page Date: Wed, 17 May 2006 12:19:57 +0100 On Wed, 2006-05-17 at 03:16 +0300, Giorgos Keramidas wrote: > On 2006-05-13 23:51, Gavin Atkinson wrote: > > The FreeBSD.org home page currently has a "Report a Bug" link > > in the "Shortcuts" section. This would make it more difficult to locate the form for > submitting new bug reports :( Because in my opinion, anybody submitting a bug report for the first time would benefit from reading the information on http://www.freebsd.org/support/bugreports.html before submitting one - and once you're on that page it really isn't hard to find the "submit a bug report" link. This is vaguely connected to pr www/97234 as well. I also don't think "Report a bug" looks good where it is on the front page. Explicitly listing it second of the six quick links on the front page has the potential to suggest that it's a link new users may need a lot - not something that we want to suggest! In no way is "Report a bug" as important as the link to the Handbook or the ports information, especially in the context of somebody considering trying FreeBSD for the first time. I fully appreciate that it's an important link to have readily available, although I would still question the sense of linking directly to the submit form rather than giving the option of searching (which may reveal a solution to the issue the end user is seeing without even needing to submit a new PR). People often send questions in PRs, or does not include all the necessary information. Rarely, but also happens that somebody sends a non-English PR. I think we should make them read the major guidelines first to make the coming PRs more accurate and help gnats-admin@. :) Regards, Gabor Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-www->gabor Responsible-Changed-By: gabor Responsible-Changed-When: Sat Mar 3 19:07:56 UTC 2007 Responsible-Changed-Why: Grab. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=97233 From: dfilter@FreeBSD.ORG (dfilter service) To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: www/97233: commit references a PR Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2007 16:39:45 +0000 (UTC) gabor 2007-03-11 16:39:43 UTC FreeBSD doc repository Modified files: en index.xsl Log: - Change the "Report a Bug" link to point to support/bugreports.html instead of the PR form directly. Each user should read these guidelines before sending a PR, but currently it seems they don't do it always. We receive questions via PRs, which should be sent to mailing lists instead, or PRs with not enough information and rarely non-English PRs as well. I hope this will help a bit.
