No newer version of vmware will work via the compat layer, at least not till someone were to port the vmware kernel modules again. I recently had a discussion with someone who erroneously thought they could get vmware workstation 8 working on FreeBSD because they read this line in the handbook: In a nutshell, the compatibility allows FreeBSD users to run about 90% of all Linux applications without modification. This includes applications such as StarOffice™, the Linux version of Netscape®, Adobe® Acrobat®, RealPlayer®, VMware™, Oracle®, WordPerfect®, Doom, Quake, and more. It is also reported that in some situations, Linux binaries perform better on FreeBSD than they do under Linux. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: Remove VMware™ from the list. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-bugs->freebsd-doc Responsible-Changed-By: linimon Responsible-Changed-When: Fri Feb 3 15:28:50 UTC 2012 Responsible-Changed-Why: reclassify. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=164736 Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-doc->eadler Responsible-Changed-By: eadler Responsible-Changed-When: Mon Feb 6 03:26:02 UTC 2012 Responsible-Changed-Why: I'll take it. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=164736 State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: eadler State-Changed-When: Mon Feb 6 03:33:00 UTC 2012 State-Changed-Why: Committed.
